Bluetooth 6.0 Adds Channel Sounding to Challenge UWB

Thursday, 12:06 PM   by Rich Brome

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has officially announced Bluetooth version 6.0. The new version of the specification adds several features, but the most notable by far is Channel Sounding, which brings "distance awareness". It is a way for two Bluetooth devices to measure their distance from each other with greatly improved precision. It will improve the performance and utility of Bluetooth-based "Find My" services. But it also offers similar functionality compared with current UWB (Ultra-WideBand) implementations in today's flagship phones. This will potentially enable precision finding and digital key functions using just the Bluetooth radio, instead of requiring extra hardware for UWB. Bluetooth 6.0 is finalized and being released to device developers this week; it will take some time for it to be supported in new devices.

HMD Fusion Enables Functional Smart Cases

Thursday, 7:00 AM   by Rich Brome

HMD's newest phone — the HMD Fusion — has a special six-pin connector the enables new kinds cases that add to the phone's functionality. HMD calls these enhanced cases "Smart Outfits". HMD is rolling out several of its own, while also releasing an open-source developer kit for others to make their own Smart Outfits. HMD's first option is the Flashy Outfit, which adds a ring light to the camera area. The light is on a hinge to be adjustable, and the light output can be customized via the phone's built-in camera app. A Rugged Outfit adds IP68 protection as well as wireless charging and an SOS button. HMD also promises a gaming Outfit, and says at least one third party is committed to making their own Outfit for vertical solutions. HMD envisions potential other Outfits including e-ink or solar charging. The Fusion is also easily repairable, including the display and battery. HMD is committing to making parts available for seven years, although it only promises software security updates for three years. The Fusion is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset with 5G, with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage (expandable). It has a 108 megapixel main camera and 50 megapixel front camera. The display measures 6.56" with 90 Hz refresh, and the battery is 5,000 mAh. The phone has 33W fast charging, NFC, fingerprint reader, and a 3.5mm headset jack. The Fusion comes with a simple clear case. The HMD Fusion will be available in the US later this year for $299. Motorola tried a similar concept with Moto Mods in 2016.

Boost's New Promo Offers Free Year of Service

Wednesday, 10:40 AM   by Rich Brome

Reversing the typical wireless carrier offer of a free phone with service, Boost Mobile has launched a new promo that offers a free year of basic service with the purchase of a 5G phone. The deal requires the up-front purchase of a phone retailing for at least $300. This gets you $300 in service credit, enough to cover Boost's $25 plan for a whole year, or a significant discount on pricier plans (spread over 12 months). The offer is available to both new and existing customers, and does not require a trade-in.

Google Expands Earthquake Alerts Nationwide

Tuesday, 1:45 PM   by Rich Brome   updated Tuesday, 1:45 PM

Google has released a new version of Android 14 today that brings several new features alongside the usual security updates. One is the expansion of the Android Earthquake Alerts System to all all 50 US states and six territories. The system automatically crowd-sources data using the built-in accelerometers in Android phones. It can then provide alerts to users when there's an earthquake, sometimes seconds before noticeable shaking starts. This can give users precious time to get to safety, such as a doorframe. On phones that can run the newest version of Gemini Nano — currently just the Pixel 9 series — the TalkBack screen reader can now use AI to describe on-screen images in detail. Finally, Google has added the ability to identify songs by audio to Circle To Search.

FCC Will Spend up to $9 Billion to Subsidize Rural 5G Coverage

Aug 29, 2024, 2:15 PM   by Rich Brome

The FCC is restarting its 5G Fund for Rural America, announcing a new reverse auction that will award up to $9 billion in "targeted investments ... to bring voice and 5G mobile broadband service to rural areas of the country unlikely to otherwise see unsubsidized deployment of 5G-capable networks." Decisions about which areas are most in need will rely, in part, on the revised National Broadband Map, which is being updating using tools like the FCC's own new Mobile Speed Test app. The FCC is also allocating almost $1 billion in funds to encourage the deployment of 5G using ORAN (Open Radio Access Network) technology. The FCC cites "benefits for competition, national security, and supply chain reliability" as reasons to encourage the use of ORAN when deploying new mobile network equipment.

Verizon Launching Satellite Service for Android Phones That Support NTN

Aug 28, 2024, 11:12 AM   by Rich Brome

Verizon has announced a new satellite connectivity service that will offer SOS and location-sharing features in cellular dead zones with compatible Android phones starting this fall. Non-emergency messaging will launch next year. The first compatible Android devices (using the 3GPP rel. 17 NB-NTN standard) are the new Pixel 9 series from Google and "upcoming Galaxy devices" from Samsung. Verizon is partnering with Skylo to offer the service. Skylo's service works similarly to Apple's "Emergency SOS via satellite" feature, and will bring Samsung (and Google) phones up to parity with iPhones in Verizon's lineup. Verizon also has a partnership (and investment stake) with AST SpaceMobile, which will offer similar functionality that works with existing phones. However that service is not available yet because more new satellites must be launched (literally) before it's ready for consumers. This new, Skylo-based service allows Verizon to offer satellite connectivity — for compatible phones — sooner. This service requires specific hardware support in the phone, including an NTN modem and L-band antenna. Qualcomm's upcoming X80 modem includes NTN support and is expected to appear in the next wave of flagship Android phones. MediaTek also offers chips that support NTN. While the Pixel 9 series comes with satellite service from Google, Verizon says it is "working towards a plan to move Pixel 9 to Verizon" satellite service. Both T-Mobile and AT&T seem to be skipping NTN and relying on future systems that require new satellites but will work with existing phones; AT&T is also partnering with AST, while T-Mobile is working with SpaceX Starlink.

Air Cooling with MEMS Technology Could Make Phones Faster

Aug 20, 2024, 2:25 PM   by Rich Brome

A new "Fan-on-a-chip" product could make active air cooling of phone processor chips more practical and common, giving higher-end phones faster sustained performance. The new "XMC-2400 µCooling" (microcooling) chip from xMEMS acts like a fan to move heat away from a processor chip using forced air, but is just 1mm thin. This makes it far more practical to integrate into a phone design than a traditional fan, like some current gaming phones have. Advanced processor and graphics chips have temperature sensors and automatically throttle down performance to avoid overheating. Active cooling systems can keep this from happening, improving sustained performance, such as during gaming sessions. The XMC-2400 uses the same chip technology as MEMS speaker elements used in some earbuds. MEMS technology is already common in many phone components, including microphones, accelerometers, and gyroscopes.

California Mobile ID Coming to Apple Wallet, Google Wallet

Aug 15, 2024, 1:49 PM   by Rich Brome   updated Aug 15, 2024, 5:49 PM

This fall, California's existing mobile-ID (mID) program will expand to support an official state-issued ID within Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. (Currently, CA's mobile-ID only works within the state-issued app.) California will join Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio in supporting IDs in Apple Wallet. Most of those states also support mID in Google Wallet, as both companies' Wallet apps use the same international standard (ISO/IEC 18013-5) to implement mID. The primary use case today for mID is presenting ID to TSA at select airport checkpoints, including some terminals at LAX and SFO. It can also be used for age verification in some apps. When used in person, your phone stays in your possession. ID is presented by tapping your phone or showing a QR code. Only the limited information required is transferred, and you must give active permission. mID in Apple Wallet works on both iPhones and Apple Watch.

Google Launches New Low-Vision Accessibility Features

Aug 15, 2024, 1:27 PM   by Rich Brome

Google has announced a major update to its Magnifier app for Pixel phones. Designed for the low-vision community, Magnifier originally did only what its name implied: using the phone's camera to see the world better via zoom, filters, and contrast controls. The new version will let users search for specific words in their surroundings. Google's example use cases include "looking for your flight’s departure time at the airport or trying to find a vegetarian dish on a menu." The app will also now take advantage of all available cameras on each phone, including wide-angle and macro, when appropriate. Finally, a new picture-in-picture view will help users stay oriented when zoomed in very far. Google did not say when the update would be available.

Apple Opens up NFC on iPhones with iOS 18.1

Aug 14, 2024, 1:46 PM   by Rich Brome

Apple is officially opening up the NFC functions of iPhones to third-party apps with the forthcoming iOS version 18.1. This will enable tap (AKA "contactless") transactions in apps other than Apple Wallet. Examples include "in-store payments, car keys, closed-loop transit, corporate badges, student IDs, home keys, hotel keys, merchant loyalty and rewards cards, and event tickets, with government IDs to be supported in the future." Users will even be able to designate an alternate wallet app as the default for tap payments, instead of Apple Pay. Apple is releasing new APIs for developers to access both NFC and the Secure Element hardware that Apple uses to store sensitive information securely. Multiple government regulators around the world have pressured Apple to open up NFC to third parties. As it has done with other concessions to regulators, Apple is restricting access to these new APIs, requiring a contract, fees, and special approval to receive an "entitlement" to use the new APIs.

Google Upgrades its Watch and Buds

Aug 13, 2024, 3:06 PM   by Rich Brome

Google today announced the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2. The Pixel Watch 3 comes in two sizes: 41mm and a new, larger 45mm diameter. Upgrades in this year's model include a 2x brighter display (now up to 2000 nits), offline Google Maps, and a Recorder app. Enhanced Fitbit health features include a more interactive running coach, Workout Builder, and a new "readiness" score to evaluate workout recovery. Improved Google ecosystem integration includes live streaming video from Nest doorbells and cameras, remote camera viewfinder and control for Pixel phones, and Google TV remote control. In some regions — starting with the UK and Europe — a new Loss of Pulse detection feature can automatically notify emergency services of your location during critical medical emergencies. The Pixel Watch 3 starts at $350; add $100 for cellular connectivity, and/or $50 for the larger size. It goes on sale starting Sept. 10. Meanwhile, the new Pixel Buds Pro 2 are designed around a new custom chip that Google calls the Tensor A1. This enables improved audio processing and ANC that's twice as strong while being more efficient. Battery life runs eight hours (30 with case) even when using ANC. The buds are also 27% smaller and 24% lighter compared to the previous version. A unique design for the in-ear portion lets you optionally twist them for a tighter fit, such as during workouts. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 come in four colors and ship Sept. 26 for $229.

Google Brings New AI Apps to Pixel Phones

Aug 13, 2024, 2:20 PM   by Rich Brome

Google today announced several completely new apps for Pixel phones, some powered by Google Gemini AI. The most basic is a Pixel Weather app. A new Call Notes feature transcribes phone calls to make phone conversations searchable via AI. (Call Notes runs completely on-device for privacy, and both parties are notified when it's enabled.) A new Pixel Screenshots app does something similar, letting you search all of your screenshots using AI. A new Pixel Studio app is dedicated to visual generative AI, letting you create and tweak images using text prompts. It can create styled or realistic images (unlike Apple's generative AI) and lets you add text and stickers. Finally, Gemini Live is a new, conversational version of Google's Gemini multi-modal AI. It requires a paid subscription to Gemini Advanced, but a free year is included with the new Pixel 9 series.

Google's Pixel Pro Phone now Comes in Two Sizes

Aug 13, 2024, 1:58 PM   by Rich Brome

Google has officially revealed full details of its newest flagship phone lineup: the Pixel 9 series. For the first time, Google is offering the higher-end "Pro" model in two sizes: regular, with a 6.3-inch display, and "XL", with a 6.8-inch display. The larger model also has a larger battery and faster wired charging (37W vs. 27W), but specs and features are otherwise identical between the two Pro models. All of the new Pixel 9 models have a "industry-leading" AI performance thanks to a new Google Tensor G4 chip and at least 12 GB of RAM. As we previously reported, all Pixel 9 models include satellite radios, for a new "Satellite SOS" feature. Similar to Apple's version of this feature, it lets you contact emergency responders and share your location via satellite, and the service is free for two years. Google also claims the Pixel 9 is twice as durable, has a 35% brighter display, and gets 20% better battery life when active, compared to the Pixel 8. The ultra-wide camera also gets a boost to 48 megapixel, and the front camera has been upgraded with auto-focus. Google has also switched from optical to ultrasonic in-display fingerprint readers, which it says are 50% faster. A revamped panorama mode adds HDR and Night Sight. All Pixel 9 series come with seven years of full OS updates. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL add a 48-megapixel 5x telephoto camera, which Google claims can zoom up to 20x for video with no loss of quality. They have the same 50 megapixel main camera and 48 megapixel wide camera as the Pixel 9, but the auto-focus selfie camera gets a boost to 42 megapixel. The Pro models also come with more RAM (16 GB), UWB, and a free one-year subscription to Gemini Advanced, including access to the Gemini Live conversational assistant. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold carries over most of the specs and features of the Pixel 9 Pro while adding an 8-inch tablet display inside. The cameras get a bit of a downgrade, though, with the wide, 5x tele, and selfie cameras clocking in at just over 10 megapixel each. The Pixel 9 starts at $799, the Pixel 9 Pro starts at $999, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL starts at $1,099. All three come with just 128 GB of storage. 256 GB is available for $100 extra; the Pro models are also available with 512 GB or 1 TB. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1,799 (with 256 GB storage). Pre-orders run through August 21st, and include free double storage with some carriers (including AT&T, excluding the Fold). The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL ship August 22, while the smaller Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold ship later, starting Sept. 4.

Moto Tags Now Available

Aug 2, 2024, 10:52 AM   by Rich Brome

Motorola's new Moto Tags go on sale starting today, available from motorola.com and amazon.com. Qualcomm Targets Entry-Level 5G Phones with Snapdragon 4s Gen 2

Jul 30, 2024, 9:43 AM   by Rich Brome

Qualcomm has released its most affordable 5G chipset yet with the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2. It offers Gigabit (1 Gbps) 5G data speeds, which is less than the 2.5 Gbps offered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, but still seven times faster than the Cat 4 LTE "typically available in the same price tier." The new 4s Gen 2 also trades a bit of CPU speed, RAM speed, display refresh rate, and maximum camera resolution compared to the 4 Gen 2. However it maintains an advanced 4nm manufacturing process for good power efficiency, dual 12-bit Spectra ISPs for advanced camera features, and relatively fast storage and USB specs (for this class). It also brings support for a few advanced features not usually seen in the 4 series like MFNR (multi-frame noise reduction) for improved photo quality in low light, as well as AI-powered audio features. The first devices using the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 are expected to be announced later this year.

New Federal Ruling Prohibits Warrantless Phone Searches by Border Agents

Jul 29, 2024, 9:52 AM   by Rich Brome

A federal court in New York has ruled that US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents must have probable cause and may need to obtain a warrant before searching the contents of a cell phone, even at border areas in their jurisdiction. This closes a loophole that previously considered phone searches part of "routine" searches for contraband, which have a categorical exception that does not require a warrant. The new ruling affirms a higher standard of privacy for phone contents, noting that "reviewing the information in a person's cell phone is the best approximation government officials have for mindreading." Therefore such searches are considered "a nonroutine search to which a categorical border search exception does not apply." The case was decided in the US District Court of the Eastern District of New York. It involved a US citizen — suspected of purchasing or possessing child sexual abuse material — detained at JFK airport upon re-entering the US.

New Windows Feature Mounts Your Android Phone Like a Disk

Jul 26, 2024, 11:02 AM   by Rich Brome

Microsoft has released a new beta version of its Link to Windows app for Windows 11. This version comes with a new feature that lets you automatically display your Android phone's files directly in the Windows File Explorer, just like any connected disk/drive. The feature works wirelessly, over Bluetooth. It provides full file access, such as move/copy, rename, and delete. The feature does require some setup within the settings of the Link to Windows app. Although it's in beta now, this version of Link to Windows is already part of Microsoft's "Release Preview" channel, indicating it should be finalized and released for all Windows 11 users soon.

FCC Revamps its Mobile Speed Test app

Jul 23, 2024, 2:08 PM   by Rich Brome

The FCC has launched a new mobile app for consumers to test the data performance of mobile networks themselves and contribute to the FCC's database of real-world mobile broadband speeds by area. Unlike the old app, the new FCC Mobile Speed Test app has a "Repeated test" function that lets users enter their info once for a series of tests, including hands-free mobile tests while driving. Users can also now review their own speed test data on a map. Data contributed to the database can help other consumers choose the best network in their area based on real-world performance. Challenge mode lets consumers challenge provider-reported coverage with the FCC using real-world tests. Aggregate data collected using Crowdsource mode is "used to inform the Commission's verification and audit work, as well as other policy decisions." Finally, a Background Test mode lets users schedule automatic tests on a regular basis in the background, on a schedule of their choosing. The free app is available now for Android and iOS.

Google Pixel 9 Series Revealed: at Least Four Models This Year

Jul 16, 2024, 2:33 PM   by Rich Brome   updated Jul 19, 2024, 9:13 AM

Google's Pixel 9 series of phones has leaked via official regulatory filings for Taiwan. In addition to a standard, Pro, and Fold model, this year's lineup will include a Pixel 9 Pro XL, meaning the Pro model will come in two sizes. [Update: Google has also posted revealing teaser videos via official social media channels, essentially confirming the leaked info.] The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has been revised with a shape and size that appears closer to Samsung's Z Fold. All three Pro models appear to have periscope telephoto camera lenses for extended optical zoom. The Pro models also have UWB, while all four models have a Thread radio for better Matter smart-home support. Some of these models have also recently been approved by the FCC. Those FCC approval documents do not contain photos, but do confirm the presence of not only Thread radios, but dual-band satellite (NTN) connectivity as well.

iOS 18 Reaches Public Beta

Jul 15, 2024, 5:15 PM   by Rich Brome

Apple has released the first beta version of iOS 18 intended for curious non-developer iPhone users. iOS 18 introduces a bevy of new features, including more customizable home screen and Control Center, redesigned Photos app, and many new features in Messages. As usual, beta versions of OS software should not be installed on anyone's primary device that they rely on. To install a public beta of iOS, users must first enroll in Apple's beta program.

Verizon, T-Mobile Protest Allocation of 4.9 GHz Band to AT&T's FirstNet

Jul 15, 2024, 1:03 PM   by Rich Brome

The FCC has proposed that the 4.9 GHz band be managed by FirstNet, a 5G network dedicated to public safety and operated by AT&T. The 4.9 GHz band (4,940–4,990 MHz) has been set aside for local public safety use since 2002, but local agencies have found it challenging to make full use of it with modern technologies. Meanwhile FirstNet and AT&T have years of experience operating a nationwide 4G/5G network dedicated to public safety. AT&T's agreement with FirstNet gives public safety users priority, but allows AT&T to use excess capacity on FirstNet for its own commercial network at times. For this reason, Verizon and T-Mobile have filed complaints against the FCC's plan, calling it a $14 billion giveaway to AT&T.

TCL Brings Two NXTPAPER Phones to US Carriers

Jul 12, 2024, 11:51 AM   by Rich Brome

After several years of promoting its NXTPAPER matte-display technology, TCL has finally landed two different NXTPAPER phone models with US carriers. Spectrum Mobile is now offering the TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G for $150, while regional carrier C Spire is now offering the TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G for $200. Verizon already offers the glossy-screen version of the 50 XE, and Metro offers the glossy-screen version of the 50 XL. The NXTPAPER versions are identical, save the display technology. Both models have a 50 megapixel camera, MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ 5G chipset, 5,010 mAh battery, and NFC. The XL model differs mostly in having a larger 6.8-inch display with FHD+ resolution, and more RAM (6 GB instead of 4). According to TCL, "NXTPAPER 3.0 display technology ... provides enhanced eye comfort while preserving vibrant colors. Both smartphones perfectly balance high refresh rate performance and a comfortable viewing experience".

AT&T Discloses New Data Breach

Jul 12, 2024, 7:13 AM   by Rich Brome   updated Jul 15, 2024, 8:37 AM

AT&T has disclosed a data breach involving nearly all call and text records from its wireless network covering a period of several months in mid-2022. This includes both AT&T customers and customers of other carriers that use the AT&T network. The records only include phone numbers (from both ends), the number of times contacted, and call duration. The records do not include customer names nor any other personal info. They also do not include the content of texts or calls, nor do they include timestamps. For a subset of the breached data, cell tower IDs are also included, providing rough location data. AT&T does not believe the data is publicly available. Wired reports that a security researcher involved in the incident claims AT&T paid the hacker $370,000 for the only copy to be deleted. AT&T first discovered the breach in April, but was asked by the US Department of Justice to delay disclosure. At least one person has been arrested relating to the incident. 404 Media reports that the hacker arrested is John Binns, an American living in Turkey. Binns claimed responsibility for a large hack of T-Mobile in 2021. AT&T will notify affected customers directly.

Android Gains Support for Thread

Jul 11, 2024, 12:37 PM   by Rich Brome

Android 15 will include support for phones with a built-in Thread radio for connecting directly to Matter smart-home devices. No such Android phones yet exist, but the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 pro Max include Thread radios for the first time. A typical Matter smart-home network today consists of smart devices with Thread radios and a Matter "hub" or "border router" that connects the Thread mesh network to Wi-Fi and the Internet. Today, smartphones control a Matter smart-home via Wi-Fi and the Matter hub. But a phone with a Thread radio would be able to connect directly to Matter devices like smart switches and smart light bulbs. This might enable faster setup, or perhaps improve day-to-day reliability by giving the phone two ways to connect to a device when controlling it locally. Matter is the relatively new industry standard for smart-home networks and devices, embraced by both Google and Apple, and designed to replace proprietary solutions.

Total by Verizon Rebrands, Remixes Plans

Of Verizon's multiple prepaid brands, Total by Verizon might have the most confusing branding. Which is why the company is rebranding the offering to just "Total Wireless". Total is also remixing its service offerings so that all plans now include 5G. Total now offers a five-year price lock guarantee (excluding promotions and discounts like the auto-pay discount). For family plans, the fourth line is free. New customers get a free 5G phone, and existing customers get a "$200 Anniversary Credit towards any 5G phone". Total now advertises "10x faster data that never slows you down", but the "10x" is referring to the speed of Verizon 5G UW vs. Verizon 4G, and the plans still carry the disclaimer that "in times of traffic, your data may be temporarily slower than other traffic." Total considers itself "a community-focused brand" "committed to serving and connecting with Latino audiences". While the logo remains red to subtly remind people of its continued Verizon affiliation, new marketing will include a distinct shade of teal, as well as a "rich blue" and "bright yellow".

Samsung's New Foldables Bring Small Refinements Inside and Out

Jul 10, 2024, 10:06 AM   by Rich Brome

Samsung has revealed its newest flagship foldable phones: the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. The two models have a new, more angular design with flat sides. They're Samsung's slimmest and lightest foldables ever, and also most durable thanks to Armor Aluminum, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and a new, more durable "dual-rail" hinge. "Enhanced layers" on the main screen help reduce creasing at the hinge. Both are powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip. The Fold6 features a 1.6x larger vapor cooling chamber for better sustained performance, and the Flip6 includes vapor cooling chamber for the first time on a Flip model. The software includes a variety of new AI features, including Google Gemini and an all-new "Sketch to image" which "allows you to create more sophisticated art pieces by generating image options when you simply sketch or draw on the photos in Gallery or Note screen." The Z Fold6 has thinner bezels on both displays. The Z Flip6 has numerous improvements to the outer display functionality and camera system. When closed, there are new multi-widget options and AI-powered Suggested Replies when messaging. The FlexCam mode now supports Auto Zoom to automatically frame you in your own photo. The camera sensors have also been upgraded and night modes enhanced. Samsung offers an industry-leading software support promise, with a full seven years of OS upgrades (not just security updates). The Galaxy Z Fold6 starts at $1,900 and comes in Pink, Navy, or silver. Black and white options are also available from samsung.com. The Galaxy Z Flip6 starts at $1,100 and comes in Yellow, Mint, Blue, or silver. Peach, black, and white options are also available from samsung.com. All models ship July 24 with pre-orders starting today. Pre-orders include a free upgrade to the next storage level.

Galaxy Ring Joins Samsung's New Wearable Lineup

Jul 10, 2024, 9:32 AM   by Rich Brome

Samsung has launched a new lineup of wearable devices, including the all-new Galaxy Ring, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, Watch7, and Buds3 series. The Galaxy Ring is similar in concept the Oura Ring: a health-tracking device small enough fit into a ring on your finger. The Ring is designed to be worn 24/7. It weighs as little as 2.3 grams (thanks to a titanium frame), has a battery that lasts up to seven days, and has 10ATM (+IP68) water resistance. It's available in three colors (black, silver, and gold) and nine sizes. The comprehensive sleep monitoring includes heart rate, breathing, movement, and snoring. It also monitors skin temperature to track menstrual cycles. The Ring automatically detects and tracks walking and running activity. A double-pinch gesture can interact with your phone, taking a picture or dismissing an alarm. It also works with Samsung Find to locate a lost Ring. Unlike some competing devices, the Ring does not require a subscription. It comes with a charging case and will retail for $399. The Galaxy Watch Ultra competes with the Apple Watch Ultra. Extra durability includes a titanium "cushion" frame, Sapphire Crystal display, and 10ATM water resistance (plus IP68 and ocean swimming). In bright light, the display can reach a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. In an emergency, it can emit a loud Emergency Siren. In Power Saving mode, the 590 mAh battery can last up to 100 hours. A special performance cycling mode can calculate your personal FTP (functional threshold power) in just four minutes. It's also approved in the US for tracking ECG and sleep apnea. The Galaxy Watch Ultra starts at $649.

NFC Starts Push to Standardize "Multi-Purpose Tap"

Jul 2, 2024, 12:41 PM   by Rich Brome

The NFC Forum is gearing up to define standards for Multi-Purpose Tap, which will enable a single tap of your phone to perform multiple actions at once. NFC Forum is the standards body for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology (AKA contactless or "tap"). For example, when tapping to pay for something, your loyalty program info could also be transmitted, and receipt received, all in that single tap. Another example is age verification when purchasing alcohol. On transit, you might be able to pay and receive an electronic ticket in one tap. Another proposed use case is sustainability, where after purchasing an item, you would receive info on how to recycle the item and/or its packaging. The NFC Forum is seeking input from the industry on all possible use cases and how best to implement this technology. Key members of the NFC Forum include Apple, Google, and Qualcomm.

FCC Proposes Mandate for Phone Unlocking After 60 Days

Jun 27, 2024, 2:38 PM   by Rich Brome

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has proposed that the Commission require mobile providers to unlock customers' mobile phones 60 days after the device is activated. (Unlocking would let customers take their phone and use it with any other compatible network.) The FCC is seeking comment on the proposal, including "whether an unlocking requirement should be applied to existing contracts or future contacts", and "the impact ... in connection with service providers' incentives to offer discounted phones for postpaid and prepaid service plans".

Apple Loosens Some Repair Restrictions

Jun 27, 2024, 2:32 PM   by Rich Brome

Apple has quietly issued a new paper revealing plans to make it easier to repair iPhones and improve functionality when using third-party parts. Currently, when an iPhone detects that a third-party part has been installed, it disables certain features that require calibration. This includes True Tone — which auto-adusts white balance on the display — and battery health metrics. Those restrictions will be lifted starting later this year. Instead, a small warning will be displayed. Apple will also stop requiring a device serial number when purchasing parts via Apple's Self Service Repair store. The changes come as a wave of new "Right To Repair" laws are being passed in multiple US states and countries abroad.

Motorola Upgrades its razr Foldables Across the Board

Jun 25, 2024, 11:00 AM   by Rich Brome   updated Jun 25, 2024, 11:15 AM

Motorola has revealed its new razr and razr+ foldable phones for 2024. While the price points are unchanged at $700 and $1,000, both models get important upgrades. The most obvious and important is that the cheaper model now has the same large (3.6-inch) OLED touch display on the outside as last year's plus model, offering extensive functionality while closed. Both models also get the same new and improved main camera with 50 megapixel resolution and OIS, and much better waterproofing (IPx8 to withstand full immersion). Both also share a new hinge design that's 30% smaller while offering better reliability, stability, dust resistance, and "crease" resistance. Both have Gorilla Glass Victus protecting the outer display and a similar 6000-series aluminum frame. Both have a 6.9-inch flexible main display inside with FHD+ resolution, and HDR10+. Other features in common include Google Gemini AI pre-installed, 256 GB of storage, 15-watt wireless charging, Bluetooth 5.4, and a 32 megapixel internal camera.

Pre-orders for both start July 10, with first availability for both on July 24. T-Mobile will offer both models. AT&T will offer the razr+, and the more affordable razr will also come to Cricket, Consumer Cellular, Spectrum, US Cellular, and Xfinity.

iOS 18 Brings Fast Pairing to 3rd-Party Wireless Accessories

Jun 21, 2024, 1:06 PM   by Rich Brome

Apple has quietly introduced a way for third-party wireless accessory makers to implement a new pairing process on iPhone and iPad that's as fast and easy as the one Apple uses for its own AirPods. This "AccessorySetupKit" API is new in iOS 18, currently available in beta for developers. Once users have the manufacturer's app installed, pairing can be as simple as turning on the accessory and bringing it near the phone. A pop-up automatically appears on the phone, and one tap can complete the process, without having to open an app or go into Bluetooth settings. Apple has recently come under government scrutiny in multiple parts of the world for abusing its market position and platform control.
