Cingular Renews Vows to Microsoft

Cingular has renewed its commitment to Microsoft, vowing to launch more Windows Mobile devices throughout 2005. Cingular already offers the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone and Siemens SX66 Pocket PC phone. Demand for the SX66 has exceeded expectations, and the phone has been so popular that it has sold out from Cingular's website. In addition to current models, Cingular should launch the Audiovox SMT 5600, originally sold by AT&T Wireless, during the first quarter according to UT Starcom (Audiovox) spokeswoman Joan Cear. Among announced devices, the Motorola MPx Pocket PC phone is probably on the short list of additional Window Mobile models, however Cingular has not yet committed to offering it on their network. Despite Cingular's announcement and a number of studies indicating increasing interest in smartphones, CDMA carriers are hesitant to offer more smartphone models. Both the Samsung SPH i550 and the UT Starcom SMT-5500 (HTC Vivida Windows Mobile Smartphone) are in danger of being shelved due to lack of interest from carriers according to company representatives.

Could ATT people get a s/w upgrade?

would people who bought the ATT version of the SMT5600 be able to upgrade the s/w to the new cingular s/w?is this even possible?

You'd have to get the phone unlocked then you would have to call Cingular customer services and get them to help you set up the proper settings. It is possible. Will a Cingular rep tell you it's possible? Not without reprimand.

I'm sure that Cingular will offer you some type huge discount, especially since that phone was considered one of the high end model phones with ATT Wireless. I am sure that there will be quite a few people purchasing this phone at Cingular and sales ...

Really Touching

I think that it's really quite touching to see Cingular and Microsoft renewing their vows like that. Thing were a little rough there for a bit but after that romantic getaway to Bill Gates' private island it looks like they have patched everything up and are stronger than ever. I wish them a happily ever after...

I thought that was the idea of buisness. Make as muhc money as you can. I might be wrong, but I thought that was the idea. I guess if don't believe in such capatalist ideals you could always move to China.

Lack of Interest or Too Expensive?

I am very inteersted in a smartphone, but they cost more than I am willing to spend. You can get a decent PDA and a new phone for a lot less than the wireless providers charge for a smartphone. This is especially annoying since they are upgrading their networks every few years, so the phone portion becomes obsolete.
