Two years after the merger between AT&T Wireless and Cingular, the carrier has announced it has officially completed integrating the two networks. The carrier eliminated a number of redundancies as well as filled in network gaps with a total of 47,000 cell sites across the US. To complete the integration Cingular also had to upgrade many long time customers to new 850 MHz capable phones and 64K SIM cards. In addition to announcing full network integration, Cingular also announced that its 3G HSDPA network is live in 44 major metro areas now.

New 3G cities?

Does anyone have a list of any new cities now covered by UMTS/HSDPA?
I'm trying to find that too. Called 611 and they had no idea.

I saw one lame list on the coverage map, and if that's it, the list is VERY limited. Their idea of a "city" is pushing it.
I came across this on Cingular's site,

Is it just me.....

Yeah it looks great on paper that Cingular has it's 3G network available in that amount of cities, but in those cities the networks are tiny. I live in Brooklyn and I am operating on EDGE. I am 10 min from lower Manhattan by train and I have no 3G coverage.
they are expanding their coverage of 3g in your area, yea when i looked at the 3g coverage i was kinda like hmm thats not alot. But when i look at other newer cities they cover great distances...
😡 😡 😡

At least you have EDGE.

It pisses me off to hear about Cingular offering 3G in some areas when they haven't even brought EDGE yet to where I live!

☹️

Need some help/advice

I was a long-time att customer... and recontracted just prior to the Cingular buyout. I have a Nokia 6620 with an ATT sim card and travel extensively. On 9/27, as I was driving back into my "home base" of Memphis, I lost all network coverage... Cingular was experiencing an outage, apparently related to the integration that's being celebrated here. Customer service assumed that when they fixed that problem, I'd have coverage again. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. I drove north to Indiana and have had no coverage since the disruption. It could be the phone (but that's terribly conicidental) or the sim card... but there doesn't seem to be any way to test the issue. Cingular is telling me that I can't put anything other than an att s...

I'm having the same problem with our new better coverage Cingular. CS explained that they shut off some of the ATT towers and that I would have to buy a new "Cingular phone and pick a "Cingular" plan. Just after I bought a new ATT Treo 650. Most of...

You should download and install the NokiaFree Unlock Codes calculator v3.00 (nokiafree.org) or newer and unlock your phone. Try a gsm chip from another carrier like T-Mobile or Cingular. I'm not sure what other gsm carriers are in your area, I'm on ...

non 850 cingy phones?

"Cingular also had to upgrade many long time customers to new 850 MHz capable phones" to the best of my knowledge, cingy has never offered a GSM phone that lacked the 850 band.
Before the GSM 850 band was used they used the 1900 band, which T-Mobile uses now. Remember the innovative Motorola v70?

In Mesa AZ alone most of the Cell dead zones Cingular inherited from ATTs neglected GSM network have been fixed. Its still not perfect, but its easily as good as T Mobiles GSM system in Arizona and is getting better month by month!

Wow. . . AHEAD of schedule?

I seem to recall them saying this would be done by Q1 2007, so this would be a bit ahead of that. Then again, that was some time ago, and network issues are not really my concern. Either way, people have less to complain about now. 🙄
