T-Mobile today expanded its Sidekick line of messaging devices with the new Sidekick iD, a more affordable version of the popular device created by Danger. Based on the Sidekick 3, the iD retains the same basic form factor, size, and shape. A new feature is the user-changeable color bumpers that cover the side and corners. The iD includes the Sidekick 3's most distinctive features, such as a trackball, QWERTY keyboard, and full web browser. Features shaved to reach the low price point include a camera, Bluetooth, EDGE data, a memory card slot, and USB. The Sidekick iD will be available for $99 with two-year contract starting April 25.

My first thought was
My first thougth was "Man maybe now all the 18 year old SmartAccess customers with no money can afford a Sidekick" then I remembered that T-Mobile still only offers these customers the $20 data feature and only with the 300 minute plan :-/
Of course they will let you get a $15 messaging package and $6 t-zones on any plan $49.99 or under, but you can't get a $20 data feture that includes the inernet and the messaging unless your base plan is $39.99 lol silly t-mo
Gosh, even EDGE!?!?!?!?!?!???
I would think that EDGE is so, so, so standard that it would be super cheap, not only that, but EDGE is old enough now.
I just can't believe a device that $99 can't have something as standard, and BASIC as EDGE!!!!!!
yeah, that's kind of lame.
Attention tech nerds!!!
Ok, so we all know not having edge is stupid. And we all know this is a super stripped down version of a sidekick. However, I think many of you fail to realize just how many people want a sidekick but are turned off by the price. The average person doesn't know what edge is, and all they want is a sidekick for internet and text.
This phone will offer the 20$ a month sidekick plan people love which includes unlimited internet, email, text messaging, and instant messaging.
It won't be a flop, I promise you that.
the sidekick isnt just geared at the trendy yuppie i wanna be popular crowd, your forgetting the others that NEED the email/text the deaf folks who dont need the mp3 or bluetooth and all of that!!!! this phone is so the deaf dont have to pay for your ...

Who is this Targeting?
I would hope that this isn't to target a younger demographic because the Sidekick fan base don't get much younger.
I guess my question/concern is why strip out the most basic of functions at this point to cut cost? why not release a slightly updated version of the SKII. Kind of like the Treo 650/680 idea. Slightly refresh the product, keep the price low. Not make it cheap > make it suck.
At first I thought this was a good idea and part of the target market would be the hearing impaired as many of them us Sidekicks but have no need for BlueTooth or MP3's but I've no idea why they didn't include a camera, even a simple VGA one. Kind of ...

It's for broke people/ people who don't need the everything but still want a cool looking phone. And what people don't realize is how big Sidekicks are for the deaf community. Why do deaf people need bluetooth? Or a 12 year old, for that matter. The U...

I waited up 48 hours for this?!
J/k, but it's interesting to find a relatively new piece of news at 1 am 😛
not even a camera?
ludicrous. with free cameraphones often available in store, who would pick this 'tardkick instead? is a qwerty keypad really worth losing every other possible feature? time will tell....but i predict it flops.
