Sprint Introduces Airave To Help Weak Reception

updated Sprint will begin offering a new femtocell device to help improve reception in homes to subscribers in Denver and Indianapolis. The Airave is a small box users plug into their home broadband connection that will cover an area of approximately 5000 square feet. Unlike T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home, the Airave uses femtocell technology to extend regular cellular coverage, so users do not need to buy a new handset to use it. The Airave will cost $50 and Sprint will charge an additional service fee of $15 per month for individuals or $30 for families, which includes unlimited calling from the Airave. Up to 3 people can make calls from an Airave at once. The device is made by Samsung and was shown off at CTIA as the "UbiCell".

Coverage Area?

Does this work in other locations? such as japan. Would be nice to take this with me when I leave the country and use the same phone and service with no roaming fee's.

Only offered to the two cities mentioned initially. Also it will only work in areas that sprint owns spectrum in. So in other words no it won't work in japan. It would be nice though if sprint could sell these online to people that live in areas no...

T-Mobile's would work in Japan on wifi but of course you have to get a UMA handset. This is a cool direction for Sprint to go in though.

NO! It uses the same frequencies as US cell phones, which means it would be illegal (and dangerous) to use it in other countries where those frequencies are licensed for other things (not cell phones at all, or incompatible phone technology).

$15 individual or $30 for family.

So... if I need to pay this fee... does that mean that only my phones are allowed on my Airave network? If my friend comes over, his phone won't be able to use it?

When will VZW step up???

😢 I live in the sticks and have broadband... when will vzw step up to the plate and start offering neat tools like this. I would pay the $15 a month to get good service at my house with unlimited service. It would be great.

Hotspot@home vs Airave

The whole idea of WiFi calling is so great for the consumer. Now that Sprint has made a "follow-up" to T-Mobile's Hotspot@Home service, Let's see some differences and similarities.

I love the fact that you can use any of sprint phone to use the feature. Not having the UMA makes it easier for everyone to be able to use the phone they already have instead of having to upgrade.
So far it's only in two markets, I'm assuming they are just the test markets until they fully launch it. T-mobile did the same thing is Seattle before it launched nationwide.
