T-Mobile's First 3G Phone On Sale

The Samsung T639, a quad-band GSM/EDGE and WCDMA 1700 clamshell, is on sale at select T-Mobile stores in New York City. The T639 was given 3G approval by the FCC in July and is the first phone to be compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network, even though the network is not yet up and running. T-Mobile won 3G licenses in the 1700 MHz band in the 2006 AWS auction and is currently working on building out its 3G network. The T639's availability may indicate that T-Mobile is preparing to launch its 3G network in some markets in the near future. When the network is launched the T639 will first immediately be able to take advantage of advanced voice coverage, and new data service will be added to the phone later.

Hate to rain on the parade, but..

Might be worth checking the samsung site - the phone mentioned here is GPRS not 3G, and definitely not active in the 1700MHz band, unless anyone knows different...

I work at Costco, and we sell this phone too...

😕

We were very confused, cause there was no info here at phonescoop, and even the t-mobile website said nothing about it. We have already recieved it and are selling it.

We were informed we are a test market, but we are not in New York, but rather in Denver. Sounds like maybe there are a few markets that will have 3G soon...
I believe it is also available in L.A. Region as well.

To Jonathanlc2005 (About T-mobile USA)

I could not sleep so might as well vent to you Jon.

I have to disagree with some of your comments about T-mobile USA. Earlier I did mention that if T-mobile were not going to be expanding in coverage and capacity wise and spectrum, they would be in a world of trouble. Obviously, with the massive purchase during the AWS spectrum, increasing coverage with cell towers, roll out with 3G shortly, and purchase of Suncom, allows them to continue to be there competing in the marketplace. For a company like T-mobile that has struggled with its growth because of a lack of spectrum and coverage has been doing a great job over the years. Their sidekick and Blackberry type devices are growing their data ARPU significantly and for only their 2.5G that ...

Very well explained, with excellent fact-based reasoning.

I don't know where you get your information, but your posts are always the best. I usually scan the boards for your posts. This one I particularly like as I am a T-Mobile "fan". I think with the announcement of 3G, they will have some real power in...

IF you want 3G services today....

Go to AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or Helio. What in the world are you guys getting so exited about TMO may or may not be getting ready to launch 3G?
The bottom line is that they are behind in coverage, way behind in getting new phones and really really behind in advanced 3G network.

I don't get it why you guys want to stick together instead of getting more bars in more places.
keep in mind, 6 years ago T-Mobile USA was little baby Voicestream. Thanks to DT, T-Mobile USA has been expanding at rapid speeds.
They are definately still playing catch up, but they are still young compared to the other 3 major carriers.

Biased much? You forgot to mention that the people sticking together have been the best in customer service as well as being the best in price. Not only that but TMO has a lot of strength in most networks anyways.

As far as phones go, the new rele...

More bars my a$$ I got at least 40+ dropped calls on Dingular on a weekly basis. I only had like 4 with T-Mobile for the 2+ years I had them 😈
...
For one because I get more than twice as many minutes. $39.99 for 1000 peak minutes, unlimited nights and weekends. With any of the top 3 carriers I get a max of 450 peak minutes for that price I believe. I also get 400 text messages for the price ...

lol it took them 2 years

and they wont even do that good with it. sprint is the highest in data arpu. att has highest customers. verizon has cooler phones.
those 3 facts with all of them 3g i probably can say with fact that t-mobile will not succeed in this. and dont anyone tell me about how they get dropped calls with one carrier and t-mobile was better unless you wanna show your retarded.

its about whos doing best with data and sprint beats verizon and att COMBINED with data.

att beats sprint and verizon in customers

verizon has the best phone selection

t-mobile. worst phone selection with dial up speeds and most dropped calls period because the phone automatically rotates betweeen roaming and t-mobile. the most write off accounts. least arpu and le...

T639 is also good for tethering

after some tethering test
found T639 is a decent modem for tethering, even with EDGE this time
note: tether through bt, and it works, just works, nothing more, nothing less

Pricing?

Any idea how much it is?
When I went to the store today, it is $199 with a $170 instant rebate, which brings it to $29.99 with a 2 year contract. That isn't bad. For the 1 year its $80.

First step in the right direction.

Great job T-mobile. They continue to amaze me, as they were a company that was struggling, purchased some AWS spectrum, and now are building out their coverage and 3G networks. This is a start but more things need to be done before this company will be strong. Their customer service, which is great, and their unique pricing points should be able to shoot them up to be a competitor in this marketplace.
out of curiousity, what do you think they still need to do to be strong?

Speaking of 3G...

I know this is been said before but I need confirmation. T-Mobile 3G is the 1700 AWS. Motorola made/are making a Q9h with the 1700 AWS Frequency. Is T-Mobile getting this anytime soon or if at all?
Phonescoop said that phone was cancelled. They took it off this site showing T-Mobile. I know AT&T is getting it soon. Its called the Q9 Global.
