Sprint Seriously Considering Sale of Nextel

Article Comments  78

May 5, 2008, 2:23 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

Sprint is said to be in the process of evaluating whether or not it should sell or spin-off its stake in Nextel. Sprint purchased Nextel for $35 billion in December 2004 and has had difficulties in merging the iDEN network with its own CDMA network. Morgan O'Brien, founder of Nextel and Cyren Call, is now seeking partners to buy the Nextel network from Sprint and use it, in part, to help build a nationwide public safety network.

Just when we thought we were in the clear.....

Ok, just when we thought we were in the clear, sprint does it again...

Didn't we just convert about a billion people to this "new and improved" system, we slowly walk back to the drawling board...

Why you ask? Well it seems that Sprint thought it would be a great idea to buy out a major analog phone company, in a digital world... Well, when Sprint baught out this "giant", they also got stuck with the responsability of making sure its analog airwave issue was corrected...Nay Nay Nextel...

All I know is if I ever have to call for help and I hear someone say, "Thank you for calling Nextel", I'm going to be a little upset...

If you can't correct the issue, then eliminate it. Head back to the board, think of something new, like sellin...

HELLO?!?! Q-Chat

We all know nextel is going away, I have been playing around with this por-series for a few days, it can "beep" nextel. Its the perfect merger. There will be no selling of nextel, Why would they? and more impotantly, who would buy it?
a hobo who wants to get made fun of...thats who...

Did you read the article?

"Morgan O'Brien, founder of Nextel and Cyren Call, is now seeking partners to buy the Nextel network from Sprint and use it, in part, to help build a nationwide public safety network."
Who WOULD REALLY buy a Nextel phone? I mean where are all the iDEN fanboys? And what would be your reasons for wanting to stay with the iDEN network?

I really want to know actually...
...
So... I'm a sprint rep and what i understand is that the Q-chat is over the cdma network through a VoIP system i believe. something of the sorts. so technically couldn't sprint just keep that technology for sprint phones and produce more Qchat enabled...

I've been saying for a couple of years now that the bone heads in charge of Sprint screwed up the best deal in wireless. Nextel had the highest ARPU, the highest retention rate, and the lowest churn in the industry. What any company needs to do is m...

Good For Nextel

I will be happy when and if sprint does this.I Have been with Nextel sense forever and I enjoy it.Sprint came in with all this carp and moving to advance billing it just has been a crap load sense Sprint came in.

I'm from Michigan where we are nextel and sprint heavy and no one I mean no one likes sprint. No ONE EVERYTHING ABOUT SPRINT SUCKS and am I the only one who hear's a bubble sound when talking on a sprint phone?
I also am from MI and to tell you the truth you are WRONG! Sprint is not the only reason Nextel does not work. Blame a lot of that on our wonderful Fed Gov. Also I have Sprint and have been very happy with it. Used to have Verizen and that was cra...

Possibilities?

With Nextel out of their way It can be possible making DT acquire Sprint with less complications. I'm also thinking what will be the effects for the upcoming wimax and qchat.
It would make sense since sprint towers (not the nextel towers)run on the same spectrum as T-Mobiles GSM towers. Yes they'll need new base stations (or modify existing) to run GSM, but it would probably be cheaper than adding your own towers to expan...

Sprint obviously has no idea what its doing

Not that any of you didnt know that.

But seriously. Sprint is so freaking stupid I cant believe it. They need to just sell out to T-Mobile, a company who seems to know what they are doing, and get their asses turned around. Cuz as things stand, they will be out of business in no time.
actually sprint is being very intelligent. Selling what has caused them the most problems. When sprint bought nextel they created a lot of debt for themselves. It cost them 35 billion dollars to buy nextel. Not to mention the fact that the network...

Will Nextel end up with 1900 MHz spectrum?

If Sprint sells off Nextel, will Nextel end up with the 1900 MHz spectrum that the FCC agreed to give Nextel in exchange for vacating some of it's 850 MHz spectrum? If so, does that mean Nextel will keep using iDen and move to the 1900 MHz spectrum?

Here's an article about the spectrum swap that I'm referring to.

I doubt it. Sprint will take the 1900 MHz and run with it, and now that I think about it, that may have been the reason for the merger to begin with. It's an easy score, the government is trading a frequency you want, what's easier than bidding on i...

I have a new proposition...

Instead of selling it...

Just take it out back and shoot it.
🤣 sprint sucks
I agree to get rid of the chirp chirp, its been more trouble than its actually worth, the largest cell carriers Att and Verizon barely even offer the push to talk. Speed dial is just as quick and everybody around you dont have to hear your conversatio...

Easy out?

The way I see it is that this is nothing more than a scape goat. The government is breathing down their necks on this interference on the spectrum and trying to get them off of it ASAP. Why would you want to have another negative mark on the record when you have some decent suitors trying to "woo" them? They are trying to give Nextel the boot wipe your hands clean of the situation and look pretty for the buyers. Also if the government does kick Nextel off and they have sold it... it's not our problem any more!"
its really not that bad of a scape goat, the guy that wants to buy it built the thing anyways.

I would sell it and use the money to make more phones.
i would give them away and run as far as possible from them. what a nightmare they are 👀
I'm sorry but I don't recall anything about Sprint making phones.

For real?

Because it's not like back in 2004 that EVERYONE IN THE WORLD was telling Sprint that it made no sense to purchase Nextel.

This could be a ploy to make Sprint more attractive to Deutsche Telekom.
