Google has created a version of the Google Talk program that allows users of the iPhone to hold regular instant messaging conversations from the browser of their iPhone. One caveat is that Google Talk needs to be open in your iPhone's browser. If you navigate to another page, your status will be listed as unavailable. You'll become available again once you return to the Google Talk page. Google Talk works with Gmail contacts and AOL buddies. The service is free.

i dont even know what Google IM is..

is it like another AIM, or MSN messenger thingy?
Yes. Google talk or gtalk is google's version of IM. One of the nice features is the chats can be stored in your gmail account as if they are emails.

Boo...screw this via the browser crap.

Give iPhone users a REAL im application that is not dependent on running safari.
Maybe iPhone users should buy a REAL phone and not some child's toy with an excessively gimmicky concept. If people want a top of the line data phone that really does everything, they should buy an N95.
