Today Sony Ericsson announced a new music service for mobile phones. PlayNow plus will give users unlimited access to Sony BMG's music catalog — as well as the catalogs of EMI, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music — and allow for over-the-air downloads directly to the phone. Users will have to pay a monthly fee to access the library of millions of songs, and will be able to keep 300 DRM-free tracks if they cancel their subscription. Sony Ericsson will be launching the service with a special edition of the W902 phone, and will pre-load 1000 popular tracks to each PlayNow plus phone. It will roll out PlayNow plus across Europe starting later this year. The service is meant to compete with Nokia's Comes With Music service.
