Verizon to Start Charging Partners for Text Messages

Article Comments  63

Oct 9, 2008, 2:32 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

Verizon Wireless will begin charging its own partners, such as Google, ESPN, and others, 3 cents to deliver text messages to Verizon Wireless subscribers. The move was announced today and is supposed to help cut down on the overhead costs heretofore absorbed by Verizon in delivering those text messages. Any company that delivers text messages to users for various notifications will have to pay the fee.

Exactly why I am leaving Verizon in April. I am sick and tired of being dimed to death by them for everything they can possible think of.

Have to say that is the biggest reason I went the the Everything Plan with Sprint. Coverage from all the majo...

Tmobile................you seriously need a cluepon.

T mobile has pretty much no 3g coverage (the 2 places that have it love it I assume). They need to offer all those minutes to make up for the dropped calls due to their piss poor network coverage...

Here's a twist...

While the subscribers may not pay, how long will it be before the partners say screw this carrier and then its off to see the wizard? The idea is valid but I wonder about the repercussions. Maybe I'm missing something but this could be a tricky move. Interesing to say the least.
If they just say "screw Verizon", then they lose ad revenue because they've lost millions of potential targets. The companies that pay them for advertising won't want to pay them as much because they're now reaching fewer people.

I'm guessing that...

they can say screw the evil empire and go see the wizard, fine, but guess what, the wizard will soon be working for VZW soon anyway.

WOW, why didnt AT&T think of that?

for as money hungry AT&T is i bet their CFO is kicking himself in the butt right now for not thinking of this cash cow 1st!!
This is terrible, really awful. It's totally double dipping; customers pay for TXT packages, or ala carte, from the carrier already.

The FCC should not let this fly, otherwise you can expect other carriers to follow suit. For now I'm glad I jus...

If this has been said already.. well Sorry.. I didnt feel like read every single post.. Yea I know.. being Lazy....

But anyhow...

Im not sure if some of you are reading the article correctly but... Its not the customers that will be charged but the Vendors will be {Google, 4INFO, others to face charges}

🙂
Yes, but obviously these companies are in business to make money. These costs almost always trickle down to the consumers in the end. The partners will either cut back their services or perhaps offer them as a subscription.

I guess we'll have t...

WHAT??? i hope they make this illegal.

This is like aol charging google to deliver an email... this is just wrong and it hurts competition and is a move to keep customers in the dark and from using competitors... i really hope this becomes illegal and other carriers do no follow thier lead.
yes and no. It doesn't sound fare but "technically" sending a text message causes usage damage to Verizon's infastructure and after billions of these spam-like text messages it would become a burden on Verizon

make it illegal? the last thing we need is the government to step in to yet another issue they shouldnt be involved with. this is business, and it will be up to the parties involved whether or not they want to continue the partnership after the curren...

Here's a Thought!

What if Google etal. Tells VZW, screw you we ain't paying squat, take us to court and see if you can force us to?
That would definetly be a court trial I'd be interested in following!
My guess is that Verizon would be smart enough to have them sign an agreement BEFORE delivering said messages after a certain date.

Does this mean an end to Google SMS?

If so, I'm gonna be so upset! I use it all the time. What a load of crap. How can we make a complaint to Verizon?
I have a stupid ? for you? What the heck is Google SMS? And what the heck is the difference between Google SMS, and regular txt messaging???

I've never heard of Google SMS, only Gmail.

This or That

A company is going to increase costs of products over time until there is an equilibrium of supply vs demand. Selling 100 burgers at $1 each isn't as good as selling 50 burgers at $4 each. Yah, now you're serving 50 less burgers but you're making more money.

Now, who do you want to foot that equilibrium bill? Us or these other large companys?
Good post.

This is not a huge deal and will not affect consumers at all probably.
This statement makes total sense. However, Google, ESPN and the other respective partners currently offer their services for free whether it be on-network or off. They rely on the advertising to make their money. If Google, Etc is already paying Veriz...
