Microsoft Tech Powers Touch Without the Touch Screen

A new technology being presented by Microsoft allows devices to offer touch-based controls without touching the device at all. It uses tiny sensors that are looking outside the device and sense changes in refracted light. These sensors pick up motion around the device, and, together with software, can let the user perform all manner of functions. Some of the controls can include spinning on-screen objects by rotating your fingers around, or selecting something on screen by moving your finger toward the device quickly. Microsoft calls the technology SideSight, and envisions using it in devices or objects that don't have the space for large touchscreens.
