Microsoft to Reduce Number of Windows Mobile Phones

According to the New York Times, Todd Peters, the vice president of marketing for the Windows Mobile division, said that Microsoft will reduce the number of phones that run its Windows Mobile operating system. It currently runs on about 140 different handsets. Microsoft believes that by reducing the number of handsets on which the OS is available, it could better combat the competition. It believes having too many devices using the OS dilutes its ability to compete. Microsoft also said that it is in the middle of re-tooling its operating system to better match the competition.

Personally, I hate Windows Mobile phones. They are not user friendly! Much too complicated for my taste, menu placement is horrible, etc... overall, any WMO device just isn't for me.
My co-worker Craig and I like to describe them as putting a great dane into a poodle-sized caged, and then giving it a lobotomy.

I don't feel this is their main problem...
yes, reducing does make since. However, how often have YOU seen a Windows Mobile Device advertisement on the main stream media (TV)? I've been a WMD owner for 4 years now and I can honestly say I haven't seen Microsoft advertise WM's advantages ever on the TV. NOW, compare that to an iPhone advertisement. Appple (through AT&T) advertises their "package" - THEIR phone with THEIR operating system.
Surely, MS will focus on HTC being exclusive. Then they can truly focus on the competition.
They had better do something pretty quick otherwise any WM advertisements (if their are any) might be a lot like their defensive "Mojave Experiment" commercials (what a shame).

Good Idea
I am a windows mobile fan, but I think this idea makes a lot of sense, but I think what Microsoft should also try to do is force all of their phones to be consistently updated, instead of relying on the operator. Both the g1 and the iphone receive updates normally, but for us windows mobile users, it's a hit or miss, and usually even if we receive an update, it takes a long time.
correct they would make way more money as a company in ever aspect of biz it would cut down on production and enable them to make more solid phones by applying more updates
