NYC Police Want to Jam Cell Phones During Terrorist Attacks

The New York City Police Department is exploring ways in which it could disrupt communication between terrorists by jamming cell phone signals if an attack were to happen. They would hope to shut down communication in a limited area, such as a zone at or near an attack site, while still allowing citizens the ability to make emergency calls. The plan is only in the discussion phase and not near any sort of testing. The idea was brought to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs by NYC Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly. He said, "Law enforcement needs to find ways to disrupt cellphones and other communications" in the event of an attack.

In the event of a terrorist attack, they should JAM the signals in Pakistan...

Because that is where the man who pulls all of the strings resides (Osama bin Laden), right?
From someone that has I lit a bomb in their PS forum name! 🤣

self centered people

I can't beleive these threads. They are trying to save people and prevent terorrists from communicating to each other if some occurs. But everyone seems to be concerned about "what about my rights? what about me me me" Who cares! If it saves people from dying in an attack shut off my cell phone, it's not like they are chaining you down and not allowing you to move. Wow, my parents can't call me and check to see if i a ok and they would prob cry and be scared but if that saves people it is worth it.

I will bet that 9 chances out of 10 no one knows about an attack until its already done. There may be people trapped and the only way they can get help is to use their cell and call someone. I will assume that more lives will be saved if the cell phon...

Terrorists won't know how to use radios?

The terrorists who make websites, use blackberries, fly airplanes, and sometimes even have college degrees, are too dumb to use radios?

Your rights suspended

I can't believe they'd even think about this. So much for freedom of speech. 😢
Your freedom of speech has nothing to do with this test. You need to research 1st Amendment rights. Your post makes NO sense.
It's not freedom of speech. Abusing that term makes it have less meaning. Freedom of speech protects your right to express opinions that are opposite of those in power (in public forums). Freedom of speech doesn't protect phone service.

It is ...

I guess I don't mind, since...

...I don't live in NYC. Not allowing me to use my cell phone (which I mainly use for phone calls, internet, text messaging and the news) would be like temporarily holding me hostage. If this is something that's seriously being considered, I would hope there would be an opt-out provision for those who don't want to be temporarily cut off from their co-workers, friends and family.

Consider this: Your new wife is pregnant with your first child and is trying to get a hold of you because "it's time", but she can't and you miss one of the most important moments of your life. You also miss one of the most important moments of her life. 30 years later you think back about how you missed out on that because the police jammed your cell phone for a ...

This has got to be...

One of the stupidest & most incompetent ideas I have ever heard out of law enforcement and we all know how stupid cops can be. How in the hell would a stupid a55 idea like this would of helped anybody on 9/11? That was our nations worst terrorist attack that required no use of a cell phone by those damn terrorist. The only thing this pea-brained idea would do is create mass hysteria when someone you know and love is in an area that was just attacked and you have no way to call them. Man maybe the dumba55 officers that were sitting on their a55es thinking of this should be out trying to police their filthy crime infested city. IDIOTS!!!
Well if you read the article this is in response to what happen in Dubai. The terrorists were using cellphones to communicate with each other and with an outside source. This has nothing to do with a situation like 9/11. And please tell me how stupid...

I agree 100%.Now that the police have announced they will jam cell phones the terrorists will use 2 way radios or cb's. Give government more power and they WILL abuse it. I worked with a police watchdog agency for awhile and was shocked the way police...

Phones are what Kept My family Safe......

My cousin was in India during the last terror attacks.

He told the concierge of his hotel that he was headed to the market with his family.

On his way, the concierge called his mobile phone that he bought minutes for at the airport, To tell him that there was just a bombing and NOT TO HEAD THAT WAY....

If HIS PHONE service was cut off he would have not recieved that message and walked right into a gun battle....

END OF STORY.......

Unbelievable, that the Powers that be, think they need to control every aspect of our life, including a life-line to safety during tutbulant times.

Maybe everyone should buy a walkie-talki or how I grew up on CB Radios or HAM radios.

Would not like this but...

It kind of makes sense because there are ways cell phones can be wired to a bomb and programmed to blow up when a phone call is received. Jamming the signal would prevent the explosion.
If terrorists can plot ways to use mobile signals to detonate a bomb, they can find ways to make it detonate when coverage drops or loses signal too - this is a back up plan. IM SURPRISED NO ONE THOUGHT OF THIS TOO!!!

Personally I rely on my mobile...

LOL....Did you just get done watching the Dark Knight by chance? The crazy bastards that attempt these kind of attacks are normally on kamikaze missions anyway but stopping any communication they have could help.
