Following the GSMA's push for a universal charger for cell phones, the CTIA trade association in the U.S. has also endorsed microUSB as a standard charger. The Universal Charging Solution, as it is called, was developed by the Open Mobile Terminal Platform industry standards group. It hopes that all new phones will use Energy Star rated chargers that have a microUSB plug no later than January 2012. The CTIA expects the new chargers to drop energy consumption by 50%.

Actually, the whole point is that they can save money by not including chargers with new phones.
