Google Overhauls Links in Mobile Gmail App

Today Google has rolled out a new feature in the mobile Gmail application accessible by mobile phones. The new feature is called Smart Links. It will take any large URL that is embedded into an email and automatically shorten the URL into a named link instead. Rather than a string of URL data, users will see underlined text representing what the link is to. To start, the feature will support plain text emails with Google-generated URLs for Google Maps address queries, Google Maps directional queries, Google Sites webpages, and YouTube videos. Google plans to support more link types over time.

Google's approach to user-friendliness:

... I definitely respect it.

This is actually a great feature. Phones don't have a big screen and links tend to be too big for them. Good for Rickroll prevention too because this might yield a thumbnail image for youtube links.
