Verizon Wireless Completes First LTE Data Call

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it has successfully completed its first data calls using Long Term Evolution 4G networking technology. The data trials took place in Boston and Seattle, the two markets Verizon has chosen to test its LTE platform. Verizon made the calls over its 700MHz spectrum using networking equipment from Starent and Nokia Siemens, base station equipment from Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson, and devices from LG and Samsung. The calls included streaming video, file uploads, and even voice over VoIP. Both Boston and Seattle have 10 LTE cell sites up and active. Verizon will continue to test LTE technology in these markets and plans to cover 30 markets and 100 million people by 2010.

anyone else find it wierd that att at its worst point in service history is strangly quiet about upgrading the network to 4G. There has to be a reason.

HSPA's upgrade path goes far beyond EV-DO's - there is not reason to upgrade to a new network yet. It is an unfortunate marketing ploy that will play on consumer's limited knowledge of networking... thinking that "4G" is much better than "3G" when in...

Give me 4G!!!

Dear God I hope it's as fast as they say it is! I have already cancelled my home phone service, maybe now I can cancell my home internet service and pick up the little wi-fi/3G/4G box!!!

When they do get LTE fully developed, I am sure they will have a plan with a cap higher than 5 gigs. 😉

can't wait

I really can't wait to get onto LTE. I'm signing my last contract with AT&T this November, then we're all moving over to Verizon after the two years are up! We'll also be moving to Northern VA, and Verizon is sweet out there. Here in Utah, it's pretty much either or, don't care. They both do well out here.

Actually, I'm thinking about moving to richmond. I wonder how AT&T does down there.
