Clearwire Announces WiMax Innovation Network in Silicon Valley

Today Clearwire announced the Clear 4G WiMax Innovation Network. This network covers about 20 square miles of Silicon Valley, including Santa Clara, Mountain View and parts of downtown Palo Alto — it covers both Intel and Google's main campuses. This network is meant for developers and engineers in the area to use for testing applications and services that will use WiMax networks. Access to the network will be free to a limited number of qualified developers in the area. Clear doesn't plan a public launch of WiMax in the San Francisco Bay Area until some time in 2010. All the companies participating in the network, which include Bright House, Comcast, Sprint, Time Warner Cable, Clearwire, Cisco, Intel, and Google, will have download speeds of up to 10Mbps, with average download speeds of 3 to 6Mbps. Clearwire and the other organizers of the network hope this will spur innovation and speed up the development of WiMax-based applications and services.

Pretty cool!

I like the initiative Clearwire/Sprint are taking here. 4G is the next evolution and they want everyone to experience the best in WiMAX. LTE may have been chosen for the world standard, But I love WiMAX for what it stands for.

It is the first 4G to be implemented and has driven the push for LTE sooner than planned. No one else was willing to move forward until the move of WiMAX became reality. The markets are growing and their footprint should be respected in the wireless industry for this accomplishment. For this, I shall stick with the underdog.

I could've sworn a long time ago that I read here on Phone Scoop that WiMax is capable of data speeds much, much higher than 6-10mbps? If I recall correctly I've read speeds of 25mbps, even 75mbps.

I've also read that next year Verizon's LTE networ...
