Today Google announced that the software developer kit of Android version 1.6 'Donut' has been made available to developers. Android 1.6 brings several new features to the Android platform, including a new version of the Android Market. Donut also has a completely re-worked the search function, including the ability to search phone systems such as the browser bookmarks and history, contacts, and the Web from the desktop. The search function will learn as it goes, and should generate more relevant results the more a user performs searches. Android 1.6 also sees a redesign of the camera, video recorder and gallery applications, with particular attention spent on speeding up these apps. According to Google, the camera launches 39% faster, and is 28% faster from shot-to-shot. Donut also features a revised VPN menu page and a way to see which applications are consuming the most battery power. Other new features include better CDMA support, support for more screen resolutions, more telephony and gesture APIs and a text-to-speech engine. Google said devices running Android 1.6 should be available as soon as October.
