Sprint Lays Out Smartphone Roadmap

Sprint's David Owns provided some information about what the company will be doing later this year and next year with respect to its phones and services. Owens confirmed that both the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment will receive Android updates, though he didn't specify to which version. Sprint is looking into offering dual-mode CDMA/GSM Android devices, but has no set plans. It is, however, considering an Android phone that offers functionality similar to Novatel's MiFi router. Owens said it will be selling lots of Android devices from HTC in 2010, and that he expects price points to come down as the platform is more widely adopted. On the Windows Mobile front, it is currently testing an update to WinMo 6.5 for the TouchPro2, but Owens wouldn't commit to a release schedule. Sprint hopes to offer Windows Mobile 7 phones as soon as possible, but is dependent on Microsoft to prepare it. As for Sprint's BlackBerry offerings, the Tour will gain Wi-Fi, and Sprint will release other Wi-Fi-enabled BlackBerries. Last, Owens noted that WiMax phones will be available next year, and that it will no longer allow tethering on its smartphones.

Sprint no longer allow tethering?

Are you kidding me? No more tethering on Sprint Smart Phones??? Well this may finally drive me to another carrier!

That was the most significant part of this article in my opinion. This infers that they will have WiMax smartphones soon and no intention to allow users to benefit via tethering. I wonder if Verizon will do the same when they get LTE up and running....

Sprint has the best total device line up in the industry

Which carrier is better on devices? Please tell me if im wrong. Not a fan boy. But I havent seen so much buzz from one carrier since cingular in the razr crzr days.

About the tethering thing...

I suppose they refer to this:

Some sprint customers are able to tether without a PAM plan, I've heard from a guy that has the Instinct (PAM plan not compatible) & he was able to tether.

Probably what Sprint its telling us is that in phones that are tethering without a PAM plan or non PAM plan compatible that are tethering will no longer do it.

This is something that they could have just resolved in their Switch. Making an announcement signals that they are simply going to stop allowing it on PDAs.

For the same reason Verizon has them, so they can attract international travelers. One of the biggest drawback of CDMA carriers is their phones can't be used in Europe which is problem for some business users.

If you are a Sprint customer like me and travel out of the US, you want to have a CDMA/GSM phone otherwise you need a spare gsm phone beside your regular phone.

Why need tethering?

If they are going to introduce a mifi like feature in the phone, it is essentially tethering. It just broadcasts the signal, which in turn is better, because you can connect more than one computer. Right now, Sprint has tethering for free or dirt cheap, the other carriers charge a lot for it. I think it is a great idea for a wireless "tethering."

Don't give up on the Pre...

The Pre has the potential to rattle the iPhone. It needs work, but as a platform it's far ahead of Android or the giant turd that is WinMo.

Sprint is only going to be an also-ran with Android and WM.
