Cox Launches Wireless Service

Today Cox Communications launched its own wireless service in several test markets in the U.S. Using CDMA equipment from Huawei and the 700MHz and 1700MHz spectrum that it won in two separate auctions, Cox is offering cellular service in Hampton Roads, Va.; Omaha, Neb.; and Orange County, Calif. on a test basis, with full roll-outs in those markets expected for early 2010. Cox said it hopes to expand quickly, and plans to open retail stores to sell its services. Cox has a roaming agreement in place with Sprint, which will provide service in areas not served by Cox. Cox didn't provide any information about what device or devices it is offering to use on its new wireless service. Cox did say that it will eventually upgrade its network to Long Term Evolution.

Cable company Cox has formally launched its mobile service, Cox Mobile. Like Comcast's Xfinity Mobile, Cox Mobile is only available to customers of Cox home internet service.
