Google Officially Intros the Nexus One

Today at a press event in California, Google officially announced the Nexus One Android phone. The Nexus One was designed in partnership with HTC. HTC CEO Peter Chou confirmed that the Nexus One has a 3.7-inch AMOLED display with HVGA (480 x 800) resolution and 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The Nexus One blends both the HTC experience and Google experience. It has a trackball with multi-color notification LED, as well as light and proximity sensors, compass and GPS. Other specs include inline noise cancellation: two mics, front and back, which enables nose suppression. Custom engraving on the lower bezel and measurements of 22.5mm in thickness, with weight coming in at 130g. It also has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. The Nexus One runs on Android 2.1. The Nexus One has "living wallpaper," that users can interact with. It's dynamic and moving, and continues to move underneath my personalization. Tap on the water and it ripples. There are five homescreens for personalization on the Nexus One. The Nexus One is also the first to showcase Android's new 3D framework in the Android platform. The app launcher is now 3D and resembles a vertical ribbon or scroll wheel. Other new features include a re-worked image gallery, which now automatically groups photos by date and location, and will sync with Picasa web albums in the background. In Android 2.1, Google has voice-enabled every text field across the entire platform. Google also demonstrated Google Earth for Android. Google indicated that the Nexus One — which it terms a "superphone" — will be the first in a class of similarly-capable devices. The device is available starting today from a Google-hosted web store or from wireless network operators. It will cost $529 unlocked, or $179 from T-Mobile to start. It will be available from Verizon and its partner Vodafone later in 2010.

I do not think so. CDMA does not work like that. CDMA carriers "load" ESNs and MEIDs and if Sprint does not sell this device then they won't allow it on their network.

No, it will not. It is a GSM phone, and Sprint doesn't run a GSM network. As dshearn pointed out, there will be a CDMA version that can be purchased. It will be designed for Verizon, but i imagine it will work for Sprint as well.

Is the Nexus One the Rumored Passion?
I'm up for renewal with Verizon and am trying to decide on waiting to see what comes out in Q1 or to get the Eris. It appears that the Passion is the CDMA version of the Nexus One? Is this true?
Keyboard
Anyone know of a better keyboard. Phone sounds sweet, but I had an Eris and just could not get used to the keyboard. The moto keyboard is even worse and it looks to be the one on the Nexus One.

Why would Google spend all that time making a phone like this, and than launch it on one of the worst network's know too the wireless industry??? AT&T got lucky with the IPHONE and that was a mistake on Apple's part. But come on what the heck. Some one explain!!

Here's an explanation: T-Mo supported the 1st 2 Android phones in the U.S. And T-Mo is far from the worst network. If it doesn't work for you, fine. That's why they sell an unlocked phone. You won't get 3G, so I'm sure you will cry about that too....

because att most likely wouldn't sponsor it because it would tick off mommy apple, and for Verizon, it needs to be CDMA (same with Sprint)

De-throne Apple?
I think what many of you, and possibly even Google overlook, is that nothing is an iPhone killer. It will take several models and handsets to overthrow Apple. It doesn't matter if the Nexus One is twice as slick as the iPhone, it's simply not Apple, and there are FAR too many people who use Apple and won't ditch the iPhone simply for the name.
The iPhone isn't bad by any means. I would personally take the Eris or Droid over it, but that's because I'ma Linux guy, not a Mac guy. The way I see it, Apple has amazing software coupled to what seems to be the some of the best hardware out there. Theoretically the Android platform should be just as smooth and fast if it was run on Iphone hardware...right...? Is it just software that makes the difference? I wonder why the Nexus One or Droid doesn't run as smooth and fast as an Iphone while using WiFi? What I would like to see as the 'true test' is the Android OS run on Iphone hardware. In the end though, I think this will just be like it is in the computer world. Apple devotees need to use them because they are the only things that get the job done. I agree that Apple should not be concerned. No phone compares with the iphone (as you say) but this is just another option for those unwilling to crossover to AT&T. If the iphone is a Lexus, some of us have to drive Fords and Chevys.

I was already confused when trying to decide between the Droid and Pre after my Verizon contract runs out next month, now I have another possible option if I wait just a while longer.

The Real Price
I have been with T-Mo for a little over 3 years now and I am still using the DASH I got then. My current plan has 1500 anytime min for $40, unlimited Internet for $20, and 300 texts for $5 a month. In order to get this phone at ANY (more on this in a moment) discount I have to downgrade my plant to 500 min for the same $40 and downgrade to unlimited web and texts for $40...or $15 a month more for 1000 minutes less. On top of that my penalty...err ahh…reward for being a good, paying, 3+ year T-Mobile customer (with 2 lines) is that I actually have to pay $379 for the phone since I already have a voice and data plan on my account. (If I only had a voice plan I would have to $279... still a $100 penalty).

Why does it take a software company to produce the a product that has it all? Google's entry into the handset business will change the industry as we know it! Take note carriers and manufacturers!
