Today Sagem Orga and partner Telefonica introduced the SIMFi, a SIM card that has a Wi-Fi module built into it. The SIMFi card will allow any regular phone to share its HSPA 3G connection with other devices by acting as a Wi-Fi router. No other special hardware will be required other than a cellular handset with SIM card slot and 3G capabilities. The companies didn't announce information about pricing or availability.

Awesome!

The carriers are not going to like this, so I doubt that we ever see this on the market.
actually, if they move away from "unlimited packadges" to usage based pricing like they are planning for LTE, I really don't see why carriers wouldn't adopt this technology. Data is data

Interesting

This will most likely prove to be a very interesting technology. The question is will carriers lock these SIM modules out in their handsets to prevent the obvious widespread abuse that will likely insue.
It would probably be easier just to change the shape of those particular SIMs and then make devices that will only read those new SIMs to prevent abuse. Either way, this sounds too cool.
