Windows Phone 7 Won't Support MicroSD Cards, Multitasking
Mar 15, 2010, 9:10 PM by Eric M. Zeman
More details about Windows Phone 7 shared by Microsoft reveal that the new operating system will not support user-replaceable memory cards. Charlie Kindel, who is in charge of Microsoft's Windows Phone developer strategy, said that the company will work with phone makers to ensure that Windows Phone 7 handsets pack enough memory for applications, 3D games, and media storage. Kindel suggested that some phones may have microSD cards embedded in them, but they will be locked in place and physically inaccessible by end users. Users will still be able to place media on the cards. Microsoft also noted that, like the iPhone, Windows Phone 7 won't permit true multitasking. Third-party applications won't be able to run in the background, and those using VoIP will be limited. "Apps that run arbitrarily in the background create an end user experience where battery life and responsiveness of the system becomes … inconsistent," Kindel said. "We focused on getting a set of experiences right where we didn't have to support [multitasking,] but we will over time."

Kudos to them
Was a big issue with Legacy WinMo when I'd go to launch an app and the card reader lost contact with it. Just give the phone 16GB+ of Flash memory.
2) Kudos to Microsoft for realizing the way WinMo multitasks is worse than no multitasking at all. The downside is- Palm already figured out decent multitasking, and I'm sure Apple's working on something.

BS
The Win7 architecture will not operate from a removable memory platform, this is true, but external SD slots will be supported for functions such as camera storage, Music & videos.
While the verbage in the post was correct, the technology described is not.
(PS) It is the Gaming Division that is developing the Win7Mo platform btw, albeit I'm not on that team.

Multitasking is not the correct term
(This is also why you cannot rely on MicroSD cards!)
The Shame
Multitasking
Memory Card Installation
Open and Customizable Platform
Supports Windows CE Apps
So... tech specs:
Does not support older Windows Mobile Apps
Is as locked down as an iPhone
No Memory Card Support
No Multitasking
Looks like I will ride out my WM 6.5 Phone(s) as long as possible, then jump to Android.
Dammit Microsoft!

I like MicroSD cards...
No need to worry about running out of space since you have as much space as you have memory cards. No ability for specialized apps (like Garmin XT) for this device. I have no use for a phone restricted like this.
2. Who carries around multiple memory cards? Nobody.
3) Who would honestly want an application that runs exclusively off of a memory...

This is why WinPhone7 will be better than Android for developers
Lack of MicroSD:
1) Means that there's ONE volume when dealing with accessing files, and that it's large. This is why Android in its current form is so anemic- Applications MUST be run off of the internal memory (which is a paltry ~256MB) .
2) Means applications do not have to 'hunt' for files- they can be grouped together, improving application performance.
3) Allows for an application-specific file system, instead of a directory-based file system. Nerds may hate this but this is a far more efficient system on a phone.
4) Means you can actually have desktop-class applications, which aren't possible on Android.
One of the strengths of the iPhone is that it's easy to develop for. You don't have a complicated mess of different phones, OS's, hard drive specs, screen sizes, etc etc etc. You have an iTouch, and iPhone ...

Think before leaping to conclusions.
As I have been seeing more news, expert's experiences and the functionality of their new OS, I am blown away. Their new OS will and is beginning to grab the other OS system companies attention. Microsoft has been doing their homework. WinMo7 should not be taken lightly and negative opinions should not be tossed around until the results have been seen. WinMo is going to make a big comeback.

Laughing my non-multi-tasking butt off!!!!!
I spit diet coke all over my keyboard from laughing so hard!!!!!!
Whatever....it is still one thing....WinMo...
