Windows Phone 7 Won't Support MicroSD Cards, Multitasking

More details about Windows Phone 7 shared by Microsoft reveal that the new operating system will not support user-replaceable memory cards. Charlie Kindel, who is in charge of Microsoft's Windows Phone developer strategy, said that the company will work with phone makers to ensure that Windows Phone 7 handsets pack enough memory for applications, 3D games, and media storage. Kindel suggested that some phones may have microSD cards embedded in them, but they will be locked in place and physically inaccessible by end users. Users will still be able to place media on the cards. Microsoft also noted that, like the iPhone, Windows Phone 7 won't permit true multitasking. Third-party applications won't be able to run in the background, and those using VoIP will be limited. "Apps that run arbitrarily in the background create an end user experience where battery life and responsiveness of the system becomes … inconsistent," Kindel said. "We focused on getting a set of experiences right where we didn't have to support [multitasking,] but we will over time."

Kudos to them

1) MicroSD cards cause more problems than they solve. Every phone I've owned with a MicroSD card runs into issues reading it after about 6 months when dirt/grime gets underneath. "Where are my MP3's? Hold on, let me take the card out and blow on it"

Was a big issue with Legacy WinMo when I'd go to launch an app and the card reader lost contact with it. Just give the phone 16GB+ of Flash memory.

2) Kudos to Microsoft for realizing the way WinMo multitasks is worse than no multitasking at all. The downside is- Palm already figured out decent multitasking, and I'm sure Apple's working on something.
I swear to me this whole article had MS sucks written all over it. Oh and by the way, I know your anti Maemo, but that's another OS that has multitasking *MASTERED*. I read a review of the Nokia N900 and the review said something like they had 30+ app...

1. Never had issues with my Memory cards. Maybe if you stopped removing them all the time, they would still work.

2. No Multitasking on a Windows phone? Are they looking for teenagers who only do one thing, or business users who care to not be prod...

ya, the whole 'no multitasking' think sounds like their taking a page from crApple and going to lock down the user experience to just MS. remember, didn't the istore just sell something like 10 billion whatevers; at at least .99 each thats a lot of b...

BS

I am a developer for Microsoft in the Gaming Division, nee XBOX LIVE and this is BS.

The Win7 architecture will not operate from a removable memory platform, this is true, but external SD slots will be supported for functions such as camera storage, Music & videos.

While the verbage in the post was correct, the technology described is not.

(PS) It is the Gaming Division that is developing the Win7Mo platform btw, albeit I'm not on that team.
The point is that microSD cards will not be replaceable. Users can't pull them out and put in a different one. Yes, WP7 will actually support the technology behind the cards and allow users to store media there, but users won't be able to upgrade thei...

Whats the point then?

what's the point of buying a Pocket PC or Smartphone if you can't multitask. Easy F**K Microsoft and their Windows 7. I won't waste a dime on them.
First off, the OS does multitask- if it's anything like the iPhone there will be at least 20 processes going on at any time accounting for core services.

But realistically, why do you to run applications in the background? If you 'close' a web brow...

Multitasking is not the correct term

Saying WinPhone7 does not support multitasking is not correct. All modern smartphone OS's I know of multitask, however what Microsoft is not allowing are third party applications to run/execute in the background and that 3rd party applications are cached to the device memory when exited.

(This is also why you cannot rely on MicroSD cards!)

The Shame

The
  • three
  • four reasons I choose Windows Mobile over the others is these:

    Multitasking
    Memory Card Installation
    Open and Customizable Platform
    Supports Windows CE Apps

    So... tech specs:

Does not support older Windows Mobile Apps
Is as locked down as an iPhone
    No Memory Card Support
    No Multitasking

Looks like I will ride out my WM 6.5 Phone(s) as long as possible, then jump to Android.

    Dammit Microsoft!
    1. Multitasking on WinMo is horrendous right now. There isn't even an efficient way to switch between running apps without installing a 3rd party app switcher (aka battery drain.) All it really does in its current state is keep things hogging idle sys...

    I like MicroSD cards...

I can think of a lot of really useful reasons for having removable micro SD cards. It allows swapping and sharing of music, videos, pictures real easy. No need for a PC with custom software to get the content off of your phone--your own content.

No need to worry about running out of space since you have as much space as you have memory cards. No ability for specialized apps (like Garmin XT) for this device. I have no use for a phone restricted like this.
    1. Most phones allow for a "USB Mode" (e.g. Palm Pre) where you can plug it in and just drag things over to it.

    2. Who carries around multiple memory cards? Nobody.

    3) Who would honestly want an application that runs exclusively off of a memory...

This is why WinPhone7 will be better than Android for developers

I'll break it down like this

    Lack of MicroSD:

    1) Means that there's ONE volume when dealing with accessing files, and that it's large. This is why Android in its current form is so anemic- Applications MUST be run off of the internal memory (which is a paltry ~256MB) .

    2) Means applications do not have to 'hunt' for files- they can be grouped together, improving application performance.

    3) Allows for an application-specific file system, instead of a directory-based file system. Nerds may hate this but this is a far more efficient system on a phone.

    4) Means you can actually have desktop-class applications, which aren't possible on Android.
Is a good thing I can see coming of this.

One of the strengths of the iPhone is that it's easy to develop for. You don't have a complicated mess of different phones, OS's, hard drive specs, screen sizes, etc etc etc. You have an iTouch, and iPhone ...

    Think before leaping to conclusions.

I am a WinMo user and am passionate about the current features in which it offers. Most will not agree with my love for WiMo. However, At first glance, I too was NOT very excited about the rumors of what Microsoft was talking up. Omitting the very features I feel sets WinMo apart from the others and what businesses and businessmen rely on.

As I have been seeing more news, expert's experiences and the functionality of their new OS, I am blown away. Their new OS will and is beginning to grab the other OS system companies attention. Microsoft has been doing their homework. WinMo7 should not be taken lightly and negative opinions should not be tossed around until the results have been seen. WinMo is going to make a big comeback.

Yes....a typically slow, jerky and hesitant comeback...somewhat. I'm just sayin'.

    Laughing my non-multi-tasking butt off!!!!!

After all the whiners and criers...complaining that the iPhone lacks (among other things, but HIGH on the list) "multi-tasking"....and WinMo7 follows suit!?!?!?!!?

I spit diet coke all over my keyboard from laughing so hard!!!!!!

    Whatever....it is still one thing....WinMo...

Can't relate. I'm using Android. XD

    A Flop.......

I had such high hopes for windows 7 but the recent news is disapointmenting.
I agree, evey bit of news about WM7 is another reason to not use it. Porting andriod might be the only reason to buy this phone.
