Twitter Buys Tweetie App Maker AteBits

Today Twitter disclosed that it has purchased a company called AteBits. AteBits developed the popular Tweetie application for Twitter both on the desktop and the iPhone. Twitter said that Tweetie will become the first official Twitter client application, and it plans to make the application available for free. Previously the app cost $2.99. It will be renamed Twitter for iPhone. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

why?
And, the big reason I ask why is because the Twitter API is so small... there isn't a ton of API calls! It's a tiny tiny app compared to other stuff out there (FB, MySpace, etc).
Don't get Soundjam'd
On the other, this is going to hurt 3rd party Twitter clients (such as Twitterriffic) or dilute Tweetie's advantage over other clients as well.
I feel the same way about MySpace & Facebook, why isn't email good enough, pictures...
