Sprint Bails on the Google Nexus One

Google has removed any and all reference to the Sprint/CDMA variant of the Google Nexus One from its Nexus One web site. Sprint spokesperson Michelle Leff said in an email to Phone Scoop, "We are not bringing in Nexus One as EVO 4G is more robust in 3G markets and amazing in the growing number of 4G areas." Google had originally hoped to sell variations of the Nexus One to all four major U.S. carriers. Verizon Wireless also decided it would pass on offering the device, having replaced it with the more powerful HTC Droid Incredible. The Nexus One is still available for customers of T-Mobile and AT&T.

What if you don't want the Sense UI...
After using the Nexus One and seeing the delays HTC's devices have gone through, what if you want a device that's at the core of the Android experience (aka won't require a 6+ month wait for Froyo)?
Or is Google bailing on the Nexus One? What about the "With Google" devices? Is that class of device disappearing?
This is a shame as honestly, after using the Nexus One (which has grown on me) and the Droid Incredible, I'd pick the Nexus One even with its janktastic trackball and buttons.
I find the Sense UI is absolutely horrendous, needlessly complicated, and vomit-inducingly ugly. If you've used a regular Android device with 2.x, there's no benefit to it. The keyboard HTC bundles with it is nothing short of ridiculously ...

Smart Business Decision
I'm no fandroid but Sprint is doing right thing here. After Google turning its back on the Nexus One it would be ludicrous to support a device that has no future network/software updates coming to it. Besides spec for spec the Incredible is considerably better than the Nexus one.

I agree, that was a very smart business decision on Sprints part, as of now they are the ONLY 4G network in the states so why focus on anything 3G anymore?

I am from cust care and I have confidential info about the EVO i cannot provide much information but this is no right because there is going to be a big surprize when EVO comes out and for many cust a plan change would change there mind about EVO and cust will need nore options than EVO, Hero or Moment...

I think it's great that this is happening to the Nexus One. It teaches Google a valuable lesson about trying to be all exclusive like Apple and so many people that want the phone but can't because of their ridiculous terms. Karma is a B. Sorry Google, love ya, but you're not Apple and you don't have to be...be GOOGLE!

Lessons Learned?
The real question is what lessons Google has learned from their first foray into retail and can they do better if they try again?
Did they learn that going into competition with your partners can be dicey, especially when they have more experience in the field? Essentially they were pimping The Droid to people who didn't want to wait.
Did they learn that promising a device and not delivering in a timely fashion can be deadly? The CDMA N1 delays allowed it to be passed by other devices and it lost the hype.
Did they learn that "The Google Way" is not necessarily suited to being a direct retailer. Email's answered in days is no way to handle tech support.

I predicted this when they announced the EVO. I even tried to convince a customer, who decided they'd rather have the N1 then the EVO (/boggle), that chances were high we wouldn't even get the N1.
