Regulators to Probe Apple's Exclusion of Google's AdMob

According to the Financial Times, U.S. regulators are preparing to investigate the recent changes to Apple's iPhone developer terms of service, in particular, the ones which exclude competitive advertising services. The Times' sources didn't know if the Federal Trade Commission or the Department of Justice is the agency in question, but regulators will specifically attempt to determine if Apple's new terms of service are anti-competitive. Google recently said that the changes create an "artificial barrier to competition."

iAd on Android devices???

I wonder if Google would allow Apple to place their iAd system onto Android devices?

Isn't Google doing the same thing Apple is doing? Purchasing a mobile advertising company so they can produce a greater profit for their company? Why then should they insist on another company allowing them to make money off of their product?

It isn't like AdMob designed, developed and manufactured their own hardware, software AND advertising strategy into one convenient package for consumers. Apple does. Hell, even Google doesn't make their own hardware!!!!

Google makes a TON of money off of Apple as it is with their search engine being the out-of-box default on the iPhone so why shouldn't Apple implement their own advertising system?

Doesn'...

AdMob ,which Google owns, already offers an open source ad mediation tool called AdWhirl which allows ads from other networks and they’ve already added support for iAd.

So yes you will see iAd used in Google apps but not vice versa.

go buy a Yahoo Android phone (Look no further than the Backflip).

No Google at all. Bing. Yahoo. No Google.

Why would iAd be different?

You can't call out Google for being a hypocrite on this one.

Unless you can show hard proof that, in th...

So where are all the 'keep government out of business affairs' advocates now?

Oh, that's right; they want the Feds to stay out of all businesses and industries EXCEPT Apple.
No actually I don't think it's the government's job to police stuff like this.

That being said, Apple's been trying to use the goverment to strong arm their competitors, and karma's a bitch

Apple is the new Microsoft...

After billions paid out by Microsoft, it's funny that Apple is getting away with everything MS has had to pay up on... I guess when you're in bed with Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi, Jobs thinks he can do whatever he wants... And I'd like to see someone truly argue that Apple isn't doing the same thing Microsoft did...
Actually, it's Google who is doing what Microsoft did, only Apple is actually blocking it this time around.

But humoring you for a minute, how is Apple a monopoly? That's what got Microsoft in trouble. And by what standard is Google not a M...

Google, you made your own bed, now sleep in it.

I think it's hilarious anyone here think Apple's tactics are deplorable.

1) Google chose to be a competitor to Apple.

2) Google chose to buy Admob, which chose to sell itself to Google.

3) Apple has every right to keep a direct competitor from monitoring device usage statistics on their own platform. That's like CBS monitoring FOX's viewers.

Regulators can whine and moan. I'm willing to bet nothing will happen other than a lot of whining. I don't know how you can argue Google's acquisition of Admob was okay, but this isn't.

It's also ridiculous to think Google is just trying to be about "opennness" and "sharing ideas" when their MO is really to kill iOS. (Maybe they should've tone...

2. Yes, because they wanted to bring their ad services to mobile devices, NOT host their on ads on android specifically. iAd and google's buyout were for totally different reasons, unl...

Good! Apple should be investigated for everything!!!

Especially for turning Bluecoyote into a brainless zombie who does anything Steve Jobs tells him to 🤣 🤣 🤣

And don't forget about all those patent lawsuits against Apple! Nokia, Kodak! 🤣
Seriously! Say what you will about their products, but their business practices are deplorable.

Exactly what will the end user experience?

How do these ads come into play when interacting with your phone? I never shop by 'Sponsor Ads' because they feel like pop-ups to me.
This doesn't change anything if you don't tap on ads. Except you won't see "Powered by AdMob" anymore.

what apple is doing is the same as what SEC is doing!

discriminate others!
if you rich and have 25,000$ in your stock account, you can daytrades as often as you wish!
but if you poor and dont have 25,000$, you only allow to daytrades 3 times in a 5 days period!
that is like going to casino, if you bet 100$ per game, you allow to take your profits and leave anytime!
but if you bet $10 a game, you not allow to take profits until you played 8 hours??
HAHA, when you have adequatly proven yourself as a major player who knows what he is doing in the stock market then you can play by the big boy rules.

Untill then, stop complaining about the high-stakes table getting more free alcohol then you!

Leave Apple Alone.

If Apple wants to do things their way, then let them continue to do so. Forcing these issues will not allow Apple to make their historical mistakes in which they lost huge marketshare.

In short? The Media and the Government is going to make Apple survive. Not Apple itself.

Saw it coming...

I'm not hating (Apple fan boys), nor am I bad mouthing your precious company but....

I won't even lie, I from the moment I heard about the new developer terms regarding ads, thought it was violating anti-trust and competition laws. It's kinda no different than what Intel was trying to do to AMD in regards to the Video cards and their chips.
