When Motorola splits off its cellphone business from the rest of the company, it will augment that company with billions of dollars from its remaining cash reserves. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company will buy back debt and give the majority of its cash on hand to the cellphone unit. The cellphone company will also try to shake free of its pension liabilities and other obligations. The split is expected to occur next year.
