RIM Intros BlackBerry Protect, Security for Consumers

Research In Motion has previewed a new invitation-only beta application/service called BlackBerry Protect. BlackBerry Protect is a tool that consumers can use to back-up, restore, locate, or wipe a BlackBerry handset. The service uses a web-based portal that consumers configure to save and back-up the data they want protected. There is also a small application that runs in the background on the device, which provides updates to RIM's servers when there is new information to backup. If a BlackBerry is lost or stolen, BlackBerry Protect can be used to locate it via GPS on a map, or ring the phone loudly and display a message on screen. It can also be used to lock or wipe the device completely if the user so chooses. The software will work on most 8000 and 9000 series BlackBerries running OS 4.6 and up. BlackBerry Protect will eventually become available for testing in the BlackBerry app test center. RIM expects to roll it out more widely (with carrier support) later this year.
