Verizon Wireless announced on July 30 that the Motorola Droid would receive the Android 2.2 update starting the week of August 2. Android 2.2 natively supports tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot creation. The Motorola Droid, however, will not offer these features. Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney said to Phone Scoop in an email, "The Droid by Motorola doesn't have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn't part of this update." Raney also said the over-the-air update will be pushed to a small set of users first to make sure it works properly. Once that is confirmed to work, Verizon will begin the general roll-out in phases. Android 2.2 offers a wide range of other improvements, including better security, Flash Player Mobile 10.1, voice dialing via Bluetooth, and improved camera performance.
I hate BS, why don't they just tell the truth?
C'mon Verizon, we're not that stupid. Tell the truth.
BS: "It can't."
The Truth: "We don't want it to."
I can swallow the truth easier than a lie. Simply put, they don't want it to because that's a feature of the Droid X or the Incredible (upcoming anyway), and they want the new gear to have perceived increased value over the older stuff.
Just level with us, rather than insult our intelligence with a lame fib.
hey, if apple think all their users are idiots!
y cant verizon!
"all phones lose signals depend on how you hold it". hahahaha
Big Red
Still into crippling devices I see. If you think your customers are that stupid that they won't discover that 2.2 has native support for tethering/hotspot or that the hardware DOES support tethering, then why not flash the droid with BREW and tell them Adroid is available for $15/month 🤣
I have no idea why it was blocked though. All recent builds redirected the user to a VZAccess website on a computer when they tried using tethered data with the droid. So obviously they were working on the feature and had it basically entirely funct...

Yup Verizon scumbags lying through their teeth IF we really don't get hotspot
They just don't want high bandwidth strain on the network. ITs pretty sad we won't be getting all the features of android. Hell I thought that is what Android was all about Verizon and AT&T are the both evil companies to make sure THAT WON"T HAPPEN. Why do so many scummy companies still want to exist today? First Sony then M$ and now these guys. haha. I LOVE corporate America. Why give the consumer what they paid for and screw them over. I pay my bill perfectly on time and always buy new tech and product and this is how I...there is how WE are treated. Kinda hope the CEOs or big wigs who decided this get fired. or loose something in their job title.
I love how they said the Droid can't handle. it. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO how does the g1 do...

The Droid incredible, Droidx, I'm assuming Droid2 all support hotspot features. So they're not worries about network strain.
Tether for free with PDANet
Just download PDANet in Android Market for free tethering and unlimited. You do pay something around $20 bucks after the 30 day trial. But its legit. Its allowed by Verizon, they know about it and dont restrict it and its part of you Unlimited data plan. I have used it since Dec 09 on my Droids.
I have always been wary of pda.net Hmmm...
Works great. It actually is available for Blackberrys and Iphones as well. Data test speeds actually would outperfom my Aircard, so I cancelled it!
You can also download it from 4shared.com for free from the phone's browser. The trial version from the market works even through the trial period but won' let you see https (secure) web pages such as when you login to verizonwireless.com
"cough cough"
should have bought an iphone 4... "can your phone and your network do that?"..lol.. 😈
No the iPhone is closed. You have to Jailbreak it to get that functionality..
OH WAIT... 🤣
yep, get an iphone 4, and give up my unlimited data plan for one that will cost me $5 more a month (I use between 2-3 gigs, so 25+10) Plus another $20 for the tethering plan which doesn't add any data for that feature, so throw another 2gigs onto that...

Droid Does!
I don't know, does anyone remember the whole "I don`t allow for open development" that a certain carrier was pitching for a certain phone in regards to another phone on another carrier?
So why is this feature being blocked by Verizon Wireless if the device has 'open development' ?
(And speaking of 'open development' , maybe someone could enlighten me as to why Verizon Wireless paid Skype to lock the Android client to their network.)
Motorola spokesperson Brenda Raney says that the Droid "doesn't have [the] hardware to support a mobile hotspot."
to make calls, not data. This is why it doesn't work over wifi (I don't know why it doesn't have the option)
Basically, if you make a skype call with their client to another skype number, it's like you made a Verizon Mobile to mobile call.. free ...

Tethering Free For All!
I have 2.2 rooted on my phone and I have several tethering programs such as Barnacal and Wireless Tether. It has the hardware but I guess Verizon wants to save its network which I do not mind because I will never go back to a regular Android Build Ever Again.
Well aren't you so sophisticato with your rooting! Personally I'm not brave enough, or advanced enough to root.
That is a bold faced Lie
Verizon and Motorola better check their facts again, I have personally seen several rooted Droids by motorola have Wi-Fi Teathering. They just have not found a ways to charge for it yet.
Menno: Advice please...
I am pretty close to upgrading my XV6900 to the Droid Incredible as it is the only Android device which is supported by vzam.net Could you give me your opinion on the device please?
MennoAug 2, 2010, 10:28 AM
well this is stupid
Considering every leak by motorola of a droid build has wifi and usb tethering built into it, and the droid supported USB tethering from the start.
Not sure what they're playing at here. If they offered it, it could be something they charged for. Maybe there was an issue with them configuring it so tethering routes through as tethered (as opposed to handset) data? So they just removed the feature?
They probably could not get Smith Micro to build a vzaccess manager for it.
wifi tethering
Me thinks they mean you cannot connect the droid to two or more devices such as the mi2200 can. We all know there more than a few apps that allow using USB or BT on the market place. But to have more than one ip address wouldn't you have to have a router build in?
No Wi-Fi transmitter!
"The Droid by Motorola doesn't have a Wi-Fi transmitter so there is no hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot."
shocking! well how does the Droid _send_ information via wifi!? these marketing people never cease to surprise me!
I think they are lying! 😈
