AT&T and T-Mobile First to Offer Cell Service in NYC Subways

According to sources cited by BusinessWeek, AT&T and T-Mobile are prepared to sign 10-year contracts with Transit Wireless, which would allow them to provide cellular service in 277 stations of the New York City subway system. Transit Wireless gained the funding it needed to move forward with a years-old plan to build the network in July of this year. AT&T and T-Mobile will be able to access that network and provide their own, branded coverage to customers. Transit Wireless and its partners have up to two years to install test coverage areas in six subway stations. Upon the successful completion and testing of those six trial sites, Transit will then have another four years to complete building out the underground coverage network across all 277 subway stations. The Metropolitan Transit Authority first struck a deal with Transit Wireless in 2007 to provide service in subway stations (but not the tunnels). BusinessWeek says terms of the deal may be announced during the week of October 4.
