T-Mobile Clears the Air Over HTC G2 Wi-Fi Software Update

In response to reports about a software update for the HTC G2 device, T-Mobile has issued a statement to clarify its position. T-Mobile said, "Wi-Fi Calling and tethering/Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2. T-Mobile knows these features are important to consumers and we're working to deliver them to G2 users in the future. We have nothing further to announce at this time." The HTC G2 runs Android 2.2 Froyo, which has native hotspot sharing software on board. T-Mobile is not yet permitting customers to use this feature. Sprint and Verizon, in comparison, are allowing hotspot sharing on devices such as the HTC EVO 4G and Motorola Droid X.

Sprint Charges an extra 30 dollars for wifi hotspot

When a feature is native to a device but the carrier makes modifications to it so they can charge and extra $ 360 per year for it this is almost the same as removing it entirely.

Not to mention that sprint charges an extra $ 120 per year to use the their android 2.2 handsets. So yea for and Extra $ 480 per year (or $ 960.00 over the life of your contract on that phone) you can get a Sprint phone and use the built in hotspot feature.

Verizon is similar, but I think that they charge a bit less for wifi hotspot, but tack on an additional $ 10 for text messaging (no $ 10 for the phone though)

The feature is native to the device, Tethering is not native to your plan.

Computers consume FAR more data than a phone ever could, which is why tethering isn't included.

it was available on my Nexus One.. but I decided to get the G2.. and now I don't have tethering.. Flip Mode, I've gotta bad feeling that you may be right on this one. T-Mobile just FML..

Or until data is no longer unlimited.

If data on handset is unlimited,there should be an extra fee for tethering (especially wifi tethering). If data is limited, there shouldn't be an extra fee.
