According to legal filings uncovered by The 451 Group, Google has acquired a small start-up company called Zetawire. Zetawire was in the early stages of developing mobile payment technology when Google bought it. The company has a patent relating to "mobile banking, advertising, identity management, credit card and mobile coupon transaction processing." The acquisition will allow Google to include the software necessary for its Android phones to make mobile payments when properly equipped. The Nexus S, Google's first Android 2.3 Gingerbread device, goes on sale this week, and includes support for near-field communications contactless payments. The transaction closed in August.
