Verizon Wireless confirmed to Phone Scoop this morning via email that it, too, will offer free calling and texting services to Japan through April 10 so that its customers can reach out to loved ones who may have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami that occurred on March 11. Verizon also noted that its wireline customers can make free calls to Japan. Phone Scoop has reached out to Sprint, T-Mobile, Cricket and MetroPCS to see if they will also be offering free calling/texting services to Japan, but none have yet responded or announced programs of their own.

This is actually kind of stupid

Won't this encourage people to make unnecessary calls to a location which is sure to be having capacity problems?
Next time your loved ones are involved in a natural disaster, please volunteer to not be able to contact them.
...
Kinda wondering what you deem as "unnecessary"? 😕
