Coca-Cola Creates Custom Phone for Promo
May 5, 2004, 1:20 PM by (staff)
The FCC yesterday approved an entirely new type of cellular device designed exclusively for a Coca-Cola promotion to take place this summer. The device, which is shaped like a soda can, includes a specialized GSM cellular phone and a GPS location-tracking device. According to a reliable source at Coca-Cola, winners in the giveway will find the device in a 12 pack of Coca-Cola cans. One of three buttons connects the winner with a company representative, who will explain that the person has won a Chevrolet Equinox SUV. Pressing a different button activates the GPS beacon, which sends the winner's location to the company, which will then deliver the prize to the winner's location. Australian marketing company Momentum Worldwide developed the device for Coca-Cola.

Places NOT to have the SUV delievered...
1. Any maternity ward (heck, any hospital anywhere, since cell phones can do all sorts of nifty things to medical equipment...).
2. The Pentagon (...Analysts from the Pentagon conclusively determined from evidence from a recent terrorist attack involving an SUV, that Coca-Cola has been aiding Al Queda through illegal shipments of cola products. This "Caffeine Pipeline" has also been linked to an increase in tooth decay related incedents, prompting the White House to consider a 'shock and awe'...).

What will they think of next?
Geez, Some of those comments on this promo are hillarious... I especially enjoyed the one about throwing the phone off the grand canyon... Very funny...
Honestly though... What's next... Are we going to be putting one time use gift cards in boxes of cereal so that kids can go buy whatever toy they would normally get in the box... this way they have a choice. Either that or have a menu on the back of the box... and an 800 number for them to call and order their toy. (optional website info)... Some things are just better left all alone.
I give congratulations to the person who takes full advantage of this contest... top of a mountain, on a boat, on a plane... anywhere that would be difficult...
Sounds like fun...

Let's hope there is service
While being cool, it's a pretty big waste. It's not like they will have a SWAT team deploy to your GPS coords. It's likely a, "we'll see you next week at work, dress nicely" thing.
But hey, I'll give respect to anyone that can hack these cans to make real calls (on Coke's dime 😁)
