AT&T Wireless Preps New IM Device, Service

AT&T Wireless is preparing to launch ogo, a unique clamshell instant-messaging device, to compete with T-Mobile's Sidekick, according to documents posted recently on the FCC web site. ogo will be the first device for North America to feature PMG (Personal Mobile Gateway), a Bluetooth-based technology from IXI Mobile. PMG will allow the ogo to connect wirelessly to other PMG devices nearby, such as cameras, watches, digital pens, and gaming devices. PMG could also link the ogo to a phone for voice service, which is not included in the device. ogo supports the e-mail and instant messaging functions of the AOL, MSN, and Yahoo! portals. The ogo also supports SMS and standard e-mail. The dual-band GSM device will be manufactured by Chi Mei Communication Systems. Documents submitted to the FCC show that service will start at $14.99 per month for customers with an AT&T Wireless voice plan, or $17.99 for other users, plus a $19.99 activation fee. The service includes access to one portal, with additional portals costing an extra $3 per month.

Help prove quoted price for OGO service

I activated my OGO November 2004. I was told my charges would be $13.99 or $14.99 since I was already an AT&T cell phone customer. They were just changeing over to Cingular. Anyway when I get the bill I am being charged the $17.99 and Cingular is acting like I just dreamed up the discount. I don't remember where I saw the information in writing and have lost the colorful instructions that came with the OGO, and can't fine it online now. Can someone help me prove my price quote was out there somewhere?

How the heck can this compete with a sidekick with no phone capabilities? No one likes carrying two devices for similar features.

I think the most disappointing thing about this phone is that it is GPRS...you think they might speed the data up by using EDGE instead.

I work for ATTWS, this device will only be IM/email based, however, another OGO device will follow by Q1 2005 that will include phone capabiliites as well.

Release Date???!!!

Does anyone have any solid info about the release of this product? I contacted ATT both locally and through telesales, and neither could give me a timeframe...telesales hadn't even heard of it

According to our systems info the release date for this is suposed to be today, 9/15. I looked on the website and couldnt find anything. I work in an AWS call center and no one knows anything about it.

Does anyone know how accurate that $17.99 pirce on the plan is.....also does that cost cover unlimited SMS or is that extra??

The $17.99/mo price is correct, but if your an existing customer with aws then you get a $3/mo credit which makes it $14.99/mo. The plan includes unlimited sms.
