Google Launches SMS service

Google today launched Google SMS, a free information service that provides several types of information in response to special queries sent via text message. The service includes business and residential phone and address listings, product pricing, and word definitions. Other features include limited Google web search results, a natural-language calculator and unit converter tool, and zip- and area-code lookups. The service is available now in the U.S., and is free aside from normal carrier charges for text messaging. Queries are sent to 46645 (GOOGL), and replies should arrive via SMS within a minute. The company plans to add additional query types in the future.

Should it work correctly

I tried it and entered my zip code..According to Google I now live some 100 miles to the east of me. Tried it 3 times, so it cost me 30 cents to get same incorrect results.

Tried it by going to google via wap and there it worked correctly.

Innovations in Communications

This is one of the most Usefull Innovations in the technology of communication for a long time. Although It really doesnt do anything 'NEW" the delivery method is unique to the kinds of information you can get.

Will be big

I am glad I don't own any shares right now in companies that provide 411 services. This has the possibility of being big: easy to use, from a huge company, works well.
