Apple today announced a new voice-controlled application for the iPhone 4S called Siri: the intelligent assistant. According to Apple, Siri understands contextual directions, such as asking the device to set up an alert, or to check the weather, or to find out the time in Paris. The software uses voice recognition and a form of artificial intelligence to translate and process questions that it is asked. It then returns results or takes actions, depending on the request. The software can read back notifications or calendar appointments aloud without requiring the user to press any buttons. The software works with built-in iOS apps, and supports English, French, and German to start. Apple is calling Siri a beta product for now.

(Follow link to read.)

HP CEO Leo Apotheker has confirmed that the company is speaking to other hardware makers about licensing its webOS mobile platform. "We are talking to a number of companies," Apotheker said. "I can share with you that a number of companies have expressed interest. We are continuing our conversations." Apotheker didn't name any companies, but Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, reports that Samsung is one of the interested parties. HP's management had hinted recently that they'd consider licensing webOS to other hardware makers. By licensing the platform, it would allow phone makers such as Samsung to build webOS-based smartphones. Apotheker said that the company isn't rushing into any deals, though. "There is no time pressure to do this."

(Follow link to read.)
