skittles2011 submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have had this phone since June 26th, 2011. I had to do to four different walmart's to get this through StraightTalk and it has been the best!! The only thing is that I had one other phone through the same company and it had waaaaaaay better service that this one..., The reason is because this has a SIM card and it's GSM so it runs off of AT&T and Tmobile towers instead of Verizon like the other StraightTalk phones.., but other than that I love it!
Pros:
1.)Big screen (I think LCD)
2.)Nice buttons
3.)Pretty fast considering it's almost like a blackberry smartphone
4.)$45 a month for unlimited everything on this phone.
5.)Thin (11mm)
6.)Loud speaker
7.)Clear calls
8.)BIG battery with a pretty long life time
9.)Good camera
10.)Multi-tasking like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
11.)Wifi capable
Cons:
1.)Not good service where I live because of it being GSM.
2.)Can't download certain apps
3.)Some themes don't work the way they are supposed to when downloaded
3.)Sometimes it freezes but that's when I am frequently using it like its a toy.
4.)Some of the things on the phone like Internet Telephone is very confusing to set up and so are a lot of other apps.

I would totally recommend this phone to anyone that loves to have a smartphone with a cheaper company, and if you love a Blackberry look-a-like.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

AnalyzeIt submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I just picked this device up on StraightTalk. I needed a second number for a business I’m starting, but I want to keep my expenses low and cover my bases. I was impressed to see such a high end phone sitting in a box in Walmart. I know the Symbian OS is a dying breed, but it is still very functional for today’s use. I also know the Nokia devices have long been known for excellent call quality and this is missing or hit and miss on many high end devices today. My personal phone is an Android.
It’s 2011 and this is 2008 device is still holding it’s own. It has Wifi, spiffy internet, EXCELLENT call quality (something many phones overlook these days), and a 3.2 MPS camera with autofocus. There’s an option for video calling and video ‘playback’. There’s an FM radio and the internet radio is awesome. I listened to RAP music this morning in German! I could get US channels, but it should be noted that the reach is far and wide. MUSIC sounds great, you can hear the bass, treble…blah blah….
It connected well to my stereo Bluetooth devices. It does require a 2.5mm plug for a wired headset and the wired headset is necessary for LOCAL radio, not internet radio.
The OS is not as intuitive as Android, but I find it reminiscent of older Windows phones, only with more stability. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good phone that doesn’t scream ‘prepaid’. The text is a bit small, but it more than covers my need for unlimited everything plan at $45/month.
It’s GSM running on ATT’s network, so the coverage should be extensive for most people.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jmeitzen submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

This phone is very nice in many respects although it isn't Android capable, a major strike against it. But the big problem is that it produces one of the highest radiation (SAR rating) levels of any cell phone made. Since the speakerphone is weak, that leaves the headset option (bluetooth) which degrades the already less than stellar audio quality another step down. This phone is out of character in that regard for Nokias as their phones along with Samsungs tend to be some of the lowest radiation phone manufacturers. I know that talking with this thing on speakerphone near my head makes my head hurt after the call on whichever side of my head I was holding the phone near.

If that's not enough info to steer you away from this anomaly, the screen isn't nearly as big as the iPhone or newer Android phones.

Beware of the hidden danger that these transceivers represent, do a google search for SAR ratings and you'll be able to find the SAR rating for almost any cell phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Uses my WiFi to make phone calls!
*True push email (with built-in client using IMAP IDLE)
*Multi-tasking. Leave apps running in background
*Good resolution screen (320x240)

CONS
*Keyboard is not optimal. There is no gap between keys like on Blackberry
*Cannot charge via USB connector (fixed in e72)
*SyncML client cannot sync on a schedule
*Caller ID name is shown when new people call, but only their number appears in the call log
*PC Suite is Windows only, can only update/backup phone with Windows
*Directional keypad takes too many presses to move through screens. A touchpad type nav would be better (& I think that the e72 has this)
*No threaded display of text messages (I loved this feature of Bb)
*Different versions with different frequencies (e71-1 e72-2) complicates things when trying to buy or sell

Symbian wins for me. iPhone OS doesn't even let you multitask and Windows Mobile is slow and proprietary. Overall I think the e71 hardware is fantastic.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

KeepNTouch submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I have 30 days to decide to stay with my current carrier or leave. Based on the review of this phone, I thought I would be migrating to ATT. Not so. Call Quality was as if I was talking in a tin can. This is not acceptable for a higher priced phone and and higher price plan package, becuase of the phone.

The internet seemed responsive, but screen too tiny to be functional. So don't see myself using the internet much due to visibility of screen.

The look and feel of device was good. This was not enough to compensate for call quality.

The text and graphics (black/white, green and some blue) on screen reminded me of something from the CRT era.

Phone has a very dated look to it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

justfinethanku submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

I purchased this phone about a week ago and after countless hours of messing around with it I am completely frustrated. I would NEVER EVER EVER recommend this phone to anyone. It is not a good beginner smart phone, it is not a good intermediate smart phone and it is certainly not an advanced smart phone.

Pros:

Speedy Internet
It feels and looks good.

Cons:
Horrid keyboard.

-If you type fast, and I do, the phone arbitrarily skips letters. At first I thought it was due to not being familiar with the keyboard, no, it just doesn't register keystrokes.

Operating system.

I purchased this on recommendation, I was told that Symbian makes one of the best smart phone operating systems on the market. 100% not true. It is slow, aged and lacking any real features that stand out.

Applications:

It seems like EVERYTHING on the phone is a free trial version. You have to pay for everything that should just come with the phone. Upsetting to say the least.

Graphics:

Really. Really. Bad.
period.

Internet:

Choppy, somewhat fast but it is hard to navigate, extremely irritating. Maybe downloading skyfire will help, but honestly I don't even care.

Syncing:

The phone does not come with ANY software to sync with ANYTHING. At least give us outlook!!!!! I need my contacts and I need them NOW. \

Email:

Pure text. It does not download full HTML emails and they are frustrating to delete "are you really really really sure you want to delete this piece of spam??" YES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! DELETE IT!!!!

The email is hard to read and the phone does not let you download a Gmail app to fix this. Everything seems to be very very ATT-only.

Texting:

Once you click on the messaging shortcut, select "in-box" click on the text you want to respond to, hit "menu" click on "reply" scroll to "reply via sms" type your message and again hit "menu" scroll again to "send" texting is a breeze..... *rolls eyes*

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mrhondo submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I wanted this phone for a while now, when Amazon lowered the price I jumped on it. Didn't want the E71x from AT&T because they hacked it by taking off Wi-Fi and limiting ring tones to 300k, no dual screens and loaded with bloatware. AT&T would make you get the $30 smart phone plan but with the unlocked E71 I only need the 15 unlimited plan.
Now for the phone
Pros -
Feels solid with a nice weight to it
Screen is very clear
Lots of apps to install
Clear voice
Loud ring tones
Great battery life for a smart phone, 2+ days
Mainly the same pros as others have stated.

Cons -
Fingerprint magnet.. (I had Ghost Armor installed now no more fingerprints)
Keyboard is tight but getting use to it
So far that is it, nothing is perfect but this is close.

Overall I'm very happy with the unlocked E71. After having the BB Bold for a few weeks I took it back and got the E71 and never looked back. If you are a Nokia user it is an easy upgrade because of the Symbian OS is the same on most of their phones.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

RShackGuy submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've used many multimedia phones, and have played with a handfull of smartphones with my most recent being the HTC Tilt 8925. This is the first phone I've have that lets me do everything I want to do, without cursing at it a few times every day.

Pros:
-While the keyboard IS a bit tight, I became accustomed to it quickly, and have no problem texting 2 handed although texting 1 handed is a bit tough.

-Camera is not too shabby, and some of the editing features are above par.

-Form, build, and quality of the hardware itself is terrific! Scratch resistant screen, mostly metal, buttons all have solid feel, and I normally hate the flaps that cover the ports, but these are very well designed!

-Battery life is terrific for the phone's size. With moderate-heavy use I can go two days, and it'll die on my somewhere during the third.

-AT&T signal in Upstate SC comes in great- Just like I've learned to expect from a Nokia.

-Enough customizable shortcut buttons that I can get to anything I use regularly with the push of 1 button.

-Good GPS response.

-Onboard browser ain't bad, and other options are available for free.

Cons:
-Speakerphone/media speaker is far from the worst I've heard, but isn't terrific. It's very directional. Point it at you, and it does a lot better.

-S60 is not bad, but showing it's age, and there are limited apps/themes etc. for the e71.

Summary:
Great phone, both for a phone first device with texting capability, or as a smart phone for productivity use.

The e71x is watered down over the e71- or rather, weighed down. It takes away some customization, and forces multimedia options for WiFi as I understand. If you are buying outright, hunt down the e71, but if you are going through AT&T, I've got not real issues with the x.

Nokia's always stood out for quality, but this phone has invested in style, functionality, and affordability all at once! I highly recommend! I'll be considering Nokia for my next upgrade as well.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kevinem316 submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I've had the E71x phone for 3 days now and this is the first smart phone I've had. I love how this phone feels, It’s heavy and solidly built. The keys are great, some people have complained that they were too small, but after a day, I don't make any more mistakes than I do on my laptop keyboard. Call quality is better than any phone I've ever had. The screen is vivid and crisp and the camera is perfectly acceptable, although the video recording probably isn't getting a full 30 fps. The battery is 1500 mah which is the largest that I have heard of in a smartphone and with normal use, you can expect a solid 2 days performance. In sum, I love the hardware.
However, when you look at the software side, things start to go downhill. I've read rave reviews of the E71 and how everything is customizable etc. But once AT&T got their hands on it, the phone suffered. As a result you can't re-arrange anything on the homescreen and you get useless applications such as express-mail that can't display HTML emails and even though the only available sync setting is called push, the email is not pushed at all. (I am using Gmail) Instead you have to go into the settings and hit receive to check if you have new mail. In this age, that is simply not acceptable. However, I found out that you can go to Nokia's website and have a text sent to your phone with a link to their far superior email client. The app is free for now but you are warned that Nokia may start charging for it in the future.. Also, the phone is almost completely incompatible with a mac.
The software is not all doom and gloom though, some included apps are useful such as songid and Wikimobile and the included browser is decent although I do also use skyfire as well, which supports flash and silverlight (the iphone doesn't). And instead of paying an additional fee for AT&T's navigation, you can download google maps which comes with Google Latitude. The iPhone doesn't have that yet either.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

As an AT&T employee, I had the opportunity to play with the device first hand months before it was released to the stores. Initially, I was impressed with the form factor and the built in features like: the text message reader, 3.0 mpx camera, mobile banking, wikimobile, etc. However, when I upgraded my contract and purchased it, my opinions regarding the device slightly changed.

PROS:

-The solid metal body of the device

-The slim design (real discreet in your pocket, except for the weight)

-Excellent reception!!!

-The video recorder is flawless (minimal to none pixalation)

-Battery life is really decent.

-The Web browser is amazing!!!

-The Youtube application is impressive.

-Decent PDA for the price.

CONS:

-The keypad is relatively small and close together. (Extremely difficult to text or email, especially if you have big fingers.)

-The camera resolution is really dark despite the built in flash. Works good outdoors.

-The battery warms up after about 10 minutes into phone call because of metal back.

-Email capabilities are limited (email attachments download are tedious and display is distorted)

-Most appliations needs licenses to utilizes, especially the Office suite docs, but this device offers a free trial.

-Sometimes text messages thats over 160 characters are sent in random over, making it difficult to read.

-Lack of downloadable content especially from the Nokia app store and 3rd party companies. (I downloaded themes that were compatible for the e71, but didn't work on the e71x.)

I guess my expectations for this device was really high because it was a Nokia and I'm used to RIM devices. Personally, I think the Symbian OS isn't as user friendly on this device compared to some N series devices. The Blackberry device have more customizeable features compared to this device. However, it is a good basic PDA device that'll get the job done though.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

airotero submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I've had the phone for a week and overall I'm pleased with the phone. I bought the phone from Walmart.com (Let's Talk) for $0.99, great buy!!!
The phone is sleek and solid. The phone is constructed well. Being the big man that I am, I'm pleased with the qwerty keyboard, love the camera and use the free wifi all of the time. Battery life is good for a smart phone. The phone is also very easy to use. Definetly a good buy.

PRO's:
1. size
2. camera/flash/auto focus/video/settings
3. great feel to the phone
4. easy to use
5. nice keyboard feel/size of keys
6. free wifi
7. battery life
8. etc. good probably go on forever

CON's:
1. can't use my downloaded songs as ringtones because the files are too large (maximum of 300kbs)
2. speaker phone volume/microphone

I'm sure I'll find more as I go on but overall this is a great phone and since I was eligible for an upgrade and got the phone for $0.99, you can't go wrong.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Sassy1 submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I purchased and E71 from Nokia and unfortunately had to send it in for a minor repair. UPS lost my phone so I ended up getting the E71x and what a disappointment.

Pros: It is a Nokia, great reception, AT&T navigator, keyboard,

Cons: AT&T branded, 2 customizable home screens were removed, wifi will not work unless you have a $30.00 data plan which is not right because my E71 worked perfect with just the media net plan. Web pages don't look great. I know it is not a computer but AT&T somehow managed to mess that up.
Cannot do a software upgrade through PC Suite like the E71
The applications and software that were free to use and essential for my needs don't work for the E71x or you have to pay for them.
PC Suite is limited also with AT&T's branded model.

If I had not had the unlocked version first, I would have given this phone a better review. It is going back and I will give Nokia my money. Yes it is more money but worth not having restrictions and since it is not insurable with AT&T I will just get Nokia extended warranty and insure it with my renters insurance in case I lose or break it.
Hope this was helpful.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

AVANESS submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I was really exited when I found out that ATT was going to start carrying this phone. I have always been with T Mobile, but my wife wanted the Iphone and I did not.

First impression was great. It looked good. But try keyboard is not easy to get used to. The buttons are all too close together and the predictive text is awful. This makes every message I sent a frustrating event.

The Bluetooth connection takes a lot longer than any other phone I have used. Pretty frustrating in California(handsfree law). The speaker is terrible which is not ok for a nokia.

I dont know if it is ATT's Media Net or not, but the internet speeds are nothing like I would expect for 30$ a month. Plus it has a trouble connecting to the WiFi. Anywhere. My push email does not go through all the time. (About 30% of the time it does) Not ok for a business phone.

Finally, SKYFIRE!!!. I was very exited when I got the phone because of the S60. At first it did not work on the phone at all. Although it could have beeen ATT's fault. But the browser si nothing like I thought it would be. The flash player is all choppy. Some of the commands hardly ever work, like the back button. Along with the double click to zoom(which does not always zoom far enough). I might as well use the regular browser.

LAST WORD-
Major screen glare

Not comfortable texting

Im trading for the I Phone

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

echoarmy8 submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I've had a Samsung Eternity for two weeks, and I don't like it at all. I'm not a phone geek or snob, and I definately don't need a smart phone. Was at AT&T store, looking for a replacement for this awful touchscreen, and this phone jumped into my hand. I like everything about it, how it feels holding it, I like that it's not a slider, flip, or t-screen. (yuk) I saw it required an xtra $30 a mo. for a pkg, and was turned off. However, BestBuy sells them for $99 for new customers (me) and w/o having to buy the xtra $$ pkg. reviews here have been great. since I'm using it mostly for talking, How is this phone as a "phone"? I read that the speaker vol sounds low even on highest setting, this true? I really like this phone. Unfortunately, I didn't think to try it in the store, but will tomorrow. As I have not owned this phone, my review is an extremely initial impression: great quality, and very intelligent design. Key pad seemed layed out perfectly, I have big hands. It just "flowed" very well for me.

Pros:
Design feel (in my hand)
Quality build. felt hefty, not cheap
Design layout (key pad)
Screen size seems perfect
Thin, not thick and fat
Not a pretentious phone. it's functional, and has a nice form.

Cons:
None yet. How's that speaker volume?

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

DrPants PhD submitted this review of the Nokia E71 / E71x:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've been through many, many phones in the past few months, and I'm sure that this is the one that I will keep for the next two years. The Nokia E71 is one hell of a phone, providing a good multimedia experience, but at the same time providing superb business functionality.

Keyboard. It's great! I love it. It looks cramped but it's perfect and i never make any errors. Also, I have HUGE hands. When I say huge, I mean it. And the keyboard has never been a problem.

Software. First time Symbian user here, and I love it. It's easy to use and I haven't had many problems with the phone. I also love all the different apps and games that are compatible with the phone. Endless possibilities.

Design. Phone looks really nice. When people see my phone they always tell me how cool it looks (I got it in white). The screen is 320x240. Size is no problem but when using the phone in sunny conditions, it's a bit hard to see things. It also smudges a lot.

Camera. The E71 camera is 3.2 megapixels. It has a flash and an autofocus. The flash is weak but gets the job done. The autofocus is alright. Picture quality is mediocre/decent. I expected more out of a Nokia phone but since it's a business phone, that's understandable. Quality isn't horrible, just not great. Night shots looks pretty bad, though. Videos are great. Video quality is alright but the audio is excellent.

Calls. Call quality is superb. Signal is good here in the D.C. area. One problem is that sometimes you lose signal when you put the phone in your pocket. It sucks, but it's never a total loss of signal.

Web. Phone has Wi-fi and 3G. Speeds are good, but wi-fi is slower than it should be. No problems with the browser, it's great. You can also download Skyfire, which allows for flash support during web browsing. It works well.

Pros:
-Great design
-Great keyboard
-Great design
-Tons of apps

Cons:
-Picture quality
-Signal problems
-Web browsing can be slow
-Hard to see screen in sunlight

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The keyboard is easy to use. The size is perfect.

Unfortunately, I could not sync this phone using Nokia PC Suite and AT&T and Nokia could not help me, so after trying 2 units I sent them back.

I was disappointed that what I thought was a high resolution screen would have such poor Nokia program graphics. I hated the fact that you have to use a fee for service Nokia Mail program to get email. Xpress Mail was useless.

I had high hopes for this phone, but it didn't work for me. For me a PDA has to look good and be good.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Will only express my 1 con with this phone.

The reception isn't that great on gprs or edge networks. If your in a 3g plentiful area then thats where you'll see this phones true performance. My 8100 pearl with have 1 or two bars of reception while this thing, lying beside the 8100, won't even register on the network.

Other than that absolutely love the phone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I definately recommend this phone, the price is right $149.99 especially for a smart phone. the gps loads very quick as well so if you are on the go. My hats off to nokia for getting this smartphone right!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Overall, it's a great smartphone (my first) with lots of available freeware.

PROS

Lots to list, topped by call volume and an excellent QWERTY keyboard, even for this texting newbie.

CON

The battery on this phone is awful.

I am not a heavy duty user. The battery is draining by 1/2 to 3/4 strength with only a few calls and text messages.

I have not had one day when the battery lasts for 24 hours. If it's not a bad battery, I may be returning the phone.

My wife has the Moto Q.
