kerton submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

It's 2009 as I write this, and, no, I haven't used my i500 for about 6 years. I've gone through a couple of Treos, an HTC Tilt, and an HTC Fuze since then.

Sure, my Fuze is way more powerful than the i500, but I'd have to say that, for it's time, the i500 was the best phone I ever owned.

It was better than anything out there. It had a touch screen in 2002, full PDA, full desktop sync. I had about 3000 contacts stored in there, my calendar, etc. IT was very reliable, small in the pocket, worked as promised, and was a great phone as well as a PDA.

It seems like, ever since then, I've always had as many frustrations with my phones as I've had benefits. My current windows phones hang occasionally, sometimes offer massive delays, often need a "reboot" to get things in order. But the i500 was just more stable.

OK, so I like 3.5G HSPA, Slingbox, Youtube, GPS, etc. But I wish there were a modern equivalent to the i500.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

TWICE actually ... with two of these phones ... moving on to bigger and better but not a bad starter PDA at all .. just don't try to text ... hard and not worth the time nor effort .. just IMO

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I like it because it is a flip phone. Moreover, it is a phone plus PDA and more.
However, this phone is missing a camara which I think is cool thing.
I did a research online and I found that Samsung made a new i550 model to replace i500, but Sprint do not want to sell it yet. This is very sad because the i550 has the whole tools.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It sells for under $200 if you can get it for $150 buy it: It does all the basic things. Organize take phone calls..that's about it.

Palm OS is slow and crappy

If you can shell out a little more and get the i600 or treo 650 or shell out a little more and get the audiovox6600

If you just need something really really basic, go for this phone. You will be content, otherwise if you need more of a phone that will work for you, and which you will rely on more: pass this one.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

From_WI submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Let me make a short story long ... I bought a Treo 650 from Sprint in December. I paid $450 for it (two year contract). Right off the bat, it was clear that it was better for e-mail, web browsing, even word processing/document viewing than as a phone. And the first two had firmware problems. The screen mysteriously cracked on the third one -- while it was safely in my suit jacket. I'm on my fourth one. And while I love all it can do it just proved to be too fragile for active use.

So I ended up also carrying around a Samsung V1660 to use as a phone. Then my company decided to hand out Blackberry devices to all of us. And then I saw that Sprint was closing out of the SPH-i500 at $89 (two year contract). I grabbed one.

At that price, the i500 is simply awesome. It is a sturdy little flip phone. And it has the Palm 4.0 OS functionality. You can use it to receive/read e-mails (e.g. Business Connection). In the box comes TWO batteries and a case and a really nice cradle. It has no camera (who cares?) and no SD slot (it would be nice, but ...). It has no internal keyboard. And it really isn't going to work as an MP3 player with only 16 MB. But at $89 it can simply be a great phone with Palm OS functionality -- WordSmith and Adobe Acrobat Reader to review documents, Address Book, e-mail, some games. You can get a flexible (roll-up) keyboard for it and with the extended battery (which is a little beefy) you'll double the already decent between-charge capacity.

I'm carrying it around (in my suit jacket) with my Blackberry (in my briefcase). In that combination, the i500 gets an A++.

p.s. My wife gets an almost-new Samsung V1660 and shares Sprint minutes with me. And my Treo 650 is reduced to the status of am expensive novelty item.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I can put this small phone in my pants pocket and don't even remember it is there. Does what I want it to do. I use my phone little to moderate and need Palm functions such as
Todo, schedule and contacts. It is great.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

wayneman submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Background = Sprint PCS, last phone = 5300 & Treo 600. Waited several months before purchasing this phone (due to the cost). Price dropped, picked up phone, works perfect for phone, work, PDA. Prior to this phone, didn't use the camera phone on the 5300, waist of innovation (and money). But, the Treo had Business Connect. This was a huge sell for my job, as this allowed me to connect to my corporate e-mail (period). This phone does that, as well as allow you to download an install other work related programs. I do agree that the "quick" dial phone method on this phone absolutely sucks, and I've almost gotten into 3 accidents because it's hard to navigate. - Pull Over idiot! Here is what I like and hate:

Pros: Phone is small, stylish, cheap, pda ready, business ready, solitare rules (download from another site), you can download programs from other sites, cool docking station.

Cons: No downloadable ringtones (Sprint will charge you this unless you call and say "hello, I can't download ringtones"), Sprint customer service (or any cell customer service but very expected), random Internet freezing (requires removing battery to reboot), battery life (purchase new batteries via E-Bay), anything else who cares? No SMS text enabled Sprint to Sprint messenging without external service, requires e-mail program to view basic e-mail (why?), I bought this phone mainly because I was waiting for the I600 to come out with Windows CE. Well they forgot to mention until too late, that I600 didn't have a pen stylis (sp) so you have to hunt and peck the number keys = no thank you, up your's.

Hints: Look for FREE Palm enabled games online. Go to Eudora to download FREE e-mail program for "Palm."

Conclusion: If you find this phone for less then $300 bones, then buy it; you'll like the clamshell phone / palm unit. If you're looking for a camera, mp3, streaming video, speakerphone then I suggest finding something else. Good luck!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

If you want a camera buy one! Palm 4 vs 5, not much of a diff if you just need to keep appointments, numbers and notes straight. Very cool having only one item to take care of two needs especially when the size is small and light. It replaced my SPH i330 and in every way it is superior. Recommendation for address file is to download 321 Contact from Handango. It is designed for the SPHi500. Samsung should have included it in their preloaded software!

Pro
Small and compact.
Touch screen
Ease of connecting to computer
Great desktop software
Voice dial exceptional

Con
Camera???
Speaker phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

allenhuffman submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I have used a Kyocera 6035 PalmPhone since 2001 and loved it other than the fact that I went through 5 of them (usually the same failure). Thank goodness for Sprint lock\line insurance.

Recently, my 6035 started acting up again but they had no more, so they replaced it with the Samsung i500. Here are my thoughts:

Samsung is nice, but other than being faster, more memory, color and ring tones, it is missing features that I used in the Kyocera:

1. No speaker phone
2. No programmable power on/power off (6035 let me program on/off times)
3. No programmable rings (you could download them for 6035, wav samples)
4. No "vibrate, then ring" or "escalate volume" ring mode -- either vibrate, ring, or both
5. No WAP browser comes with it, so no way to SMS or chat or anything via Sprint!
6. No e-mail app comes with it
7. No integration apps like the minute tracker and such (virtually NO i500 software found online!)

So, although it's smaller and cooler, I can't do half the things with it I could have done with a Kyocera 7135 had Sprint carried it.

It's a good phone so far, but severely lacking in features. It's basically just a phone with a color Palm with very little intergration between the two.

The dialer system is better, and I think you can do more memos and voice dialing slots, but...

Once I get a sync cable and get my 3rd party apps moved over I will be happier.

For $600, though, I would look into the Treo 600 - coworkers with it seem to like it (just no analog mode and not a flip).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

This phone is terrible. I went back to my HP pocket PC and bought a new Sanyo phone. Sanyo is the most reliable phone that Sprint carries by far. I own 3 of them all different and they all work great!! This i500 would never ring I would miss 75% of my calls. Sanyo has never failed me in this regard. I can't wait until they build a PDA phone as it should truly work.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ds7048 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I purchased this phone simply because I could not get a replacement battery for my I300. I kept the phone for about 3 weeks. I loved the size, & ringer tones. I was disapointed in the limited capability to access internet sites. I could no longer access my AOL account and other internet sites I could with my I300. I spoke endlessly with techs from Sprint to help me, but to the end, the phone was not compatible. The screen is too small to read any files, unless you don't mind eye strain. If you don't need to access the internet, or use it for reviewing excel files, word documents etc. this phone migth fit your needs. For $550.00+ I thought I was getting an improvement over the I300, only to be disapointed. It's cute, but not enough for the price. I decided to go with the Hitachi G1000 (see my review on this phone).

Over-all, I rate this phone 2.5.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rlgonzalez submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have owned an SPH-I500 for over two months and can not say anything bad about it!

Personally prefer PALM instead of Windows CE so that was a plus.

I was in the market for both a new cell phone and a PDA and did not want to carry two different units.

Compared to other units that felt like having a "BRICK" on my belt, this phone is so small and light weight that I can carry it on my shirt pocket.

Since I already own a digital camera, I had no need to have the "CAMERA" feature in the phone.

Love the "ONE HAND" operations. This feature does not exist in some of the other Phone/PDA models.

Since I have my own web site and mail server, I can send and receive my POP3 mail anywhere I have phone coverage.

Would encourage anyone to invest the money and buy one of these units.

Thank you Samsung for producing a WINNER!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I was very happy with the size considering the fact that it was a Palm device as well as a phone.

The phone is very well designed and functions better than any phone I have had to date. Including the i300, i330, and the G1000.
The big problem is I have had 2 defective phones!
Be aware that the Palm writing pad cracks an has problems after a month or so.

I am on the way to Sprint to replace my second unit.

Good luck!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

SJS submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

DEAL KILLER!

Talked top Samsung tech support, no plans for SDK update, custom ringers (since no caller ID)

Ringers that come with the phone are Lawrence Welk top 10 Poly's at best.

Third part apps:

Several vendors: Contact4

Contacts 4 does not support dialing on Samsung smartphones because Samsung does not plan on releasing any of their APIs to developers.

So, if you'd like to see dialing support for your smartphone in other 3rd party applications as well, I'd suggest that you contact Samsung and tell them to release information to developers about their APIs.

Unless I can get the inside scoop from a Samsung programmer, dialing support for Samsung smartphones most likely won't be added to Contacts 5...

I called Samsung tech support - no plans to release API to developers.

+1 (888) 987-4357 Call Samsung and give them your opinion.

How hard would it be to allow developers to create apps directly for the phone?

All your toes and fingers are required to make a call, unless you use Voice Dial.

Jump through hoops and crawl under chairs to accomplish simple objectives.....

And all for $600.00! The phone could receive 4 stars if these simple no brainer problems where corrected.

Yes it does need a SD slot (small form factor - fractional increase)

Market demands - Vaporware Hovers - Consumers Pay!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

boe submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i500:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

The phone is amazing! I love the display - I had it in direct sunlight and I had no problem reading it at all! The functions are easy to access although the letter button/screen keyboard on the graffiti board didn't activate as easily as the number button. I really liked the phone - nothing else currently compares in my opinion. I think Samsung excelled in releasing this phone, it is fantastic but has room for improvement.

Things I would like on the next model:
1. OLED exterior display - I like to use my phone as a watch and I like to see the incoming number.

2. wav/qcp ringer playback - I like to have my phone announce certain people are calling so I don't have to even look at the phone. I think I read that the Korean model (m500?) will have this feature.

3. sell the phone with a program like the pocket PC phones that lets you dial a phone number by saying the numbers.

4. replace the numeric keys with lighted rubber keys with clear separation - makes it easier for me to dial one handed.

5. include a better case - holster style.

6. sell the phone with a car adapter - how many people don't need one?

7. I'd rather they made two different models of there next phone - one with a camera and one without. I think is a great option for people who want it but it seems no different than if a refrigerator manufacturer made all their refrigerators with the icemaker whether you wanted that feature or not, you were paying for it and it is taking up the space for that feature.

8. Make the vibration mode much more powerful, it is barely noticeable.

I repeat this is a GREAT phone! VERY nice! But the first 2 features I listed are too important for me to consider upgrading to this phone at $600 although it really is a wonderful phone. I really like the fact that the two different batteries were included with this phone - a treat since I always end up getting a spare battery for my phones.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
