narn3049 submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

i had this phone for maybe 5 years???????????

I dropped it and even submerged it, but it didn't stop working

Now it was upgrading time and my phone was acting up, like some keys didnt press that well but it despite that worked.

So i did a stress test by throwing the phone, twice, the first time it cracked the front facing, the next time it was utter distruction. the phone itself looked in shape, minus the heavy the scratching but the battery was cracked, screen messed up, and it was just a hard toss to the road.

The phone was REAALLLLLLLLLLLLLY all i needed at the time. I mean the games were great. The ringtones were polyphonic kind but were still loud and served me not many missed calls.

This phone is really impressive, I know this is going to be hard to believe, but i had the phone when I was biking it fell out into the sidewalk, so i got it. But i didn't realize until i used it that the top onswitch antennae panel was missing. it turned out to be on the sidewalk, was found later that night, still in great shape. Placed back on and still worked like a charm.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ATnT Cellular submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

For 20 bucks! This phone is in great shape and it only had 35 hours of life time, which is great for an older phone.

I bought this phone for three reasons:

-reception/great call quality
-battery life
-durable easy to use handset.

In this day and age, all phones are feature-focused, even the low end ones. As a trade off, phones are cheaply made and break more easily. Plus, the keypads are all scrunched up any more because people want them smaller and smaller.

Well, I am proud to sport this phone because it is my way of saying "no" to the modern cellular trends. Honestly, phones were at their best when they were used as just phones. Talking and texting, no more, no less.

I reccomend that if you want to revive the golden days of cellular phons, go to Ebay and get one. You won't regret it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cellularantenna submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

If you are looking for a GSM phone that works great as a PHONE this would be the one.

I'm in the cellular business so I get to try out lots of phones. For my own personal phone I keep coming back to this one on the AT&T network. The phone is practically indestructible. I have dropped in on cement at least 10 times and it has never skipped a beat. Signal strength is quite good. Others have complained about the top power button coming off. I am not easy on phones and I have never lost this button. Maybe the software was corrected in later versions because I have never had a freeze up. Software is perfect. Sound quality is fine. Battery life is excellent.
Now here's a big bonus: this is one of the only GSM phones I know of that will work with a full install car kit. The car kit (Nokia p/n CARK91 or CARK91H) is awesome. Has a cradle, speaker, microphone for your visor and connects automatically to an external antenna (purchased separately) when you put in in the cradle.
For Cons, you need to activate the key lock before you put it in your pocket or you'll be dialing Moscow. The screen is black and white (doesn't bother me).

For a back up or for your primary cell phone you can't go wrong with the 6340i.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ShadowScorpion submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I got this one for dirt-cheap, and bloody hell, it was worth every single penny I spent on it! Being a Pre-B3.0 prototype, it DOES have a couple of problems, but nothing major.

PROS:
- RF is unbelievable! Holds signal even in the most abysmal coverage zones (Rogers/Fido, Quebec City, Canada)
- Battery life is absolutely STUNNING, I have used it quite a bit and I squeezed out THREE WEEKS of battery life. I've been thinking about getting an extended battery...
- Sound quality is very good, I have no problems hearing or being heard.
- Large, easy to read screen
- AMPS/TDMA capability when outside of native GSM footprint (saved my butt a couple of times), though this will be ancient history after May 31st...

CONS:
- This might sound superficial, but what the hell... GREEN LEDs... why, Nokia, why? Blue, red or orange would have yielded a very nice effect with little to no cost difference...
- Since this is a prototype, there are some firmware bugs and random resets, but the resets have been getting more and more sporadic. Firmware version is Vp 6.02.0. Will update it shortly.

Overall, I am very pleased with the 6340i. Now if only I could find some decent faceplates...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

This phone gets a signal when no ohters get signals here. My neighbors dont get one. My parents have a hard time keeping one and so do I. I have several visitors and no matter what phone they have it wont keep a signal. This one you drop and it keeps on working. All the others one or two drops and its repair time. In fact my oldest daughter went back to using this phone if only because she can get her calls and not miss them. I take this one camping to make sure I get m y calls also

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Retropia submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had my 6340i since May of 03, and it's been a great phone. Cingular only sold a couple of different GAIT phones during their conversation to GSM network, and this is one of them. The advantage to this phone is that it will work on GSM, TDMA and AMPS (analog) networks. Analog and TDMA are still available in places off the beaten path where GSM will likely never be available.

Cingular's answer to the lack of GSM network in rural areas? "Better get yourself a CB radio!" Instead, I think I'll hang onto my 6340i as long as Analog and TDMA are still available where GSM isn't.

This phone has typical Nokia qualities: good reception and easy interface. It also has the handy PC Sync software that allows you to download your contacts and calendar from your computer's Outlook software. To connect, you can purchase an inexpensive data cable on eBay, or use the built-in IR connector with your laptop or PDA.

A couple of months ago I began experiencing random on-off cycling, which went away when the phone was removed from it's super-tight vinyl cover (made by Body Glove). I purchased a looser-fitting cover and it continues to work fine.

The phone is large by today's standards; I find it's too large for my pocket so I wear it with a belt clip. The power button on top is small; I use the edge of a fingernail to activate it. Because the button is flush, I'm not sure how it's possible to break it off, as a few other reviewers have claimed to have happened.

If you are ever in areas not covered by GSM, this is a phone worth considering.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cjg submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Yes, I know it's not the latest or greatest. It's not a flip, color, or camera phone. But it still works well for making calls and text messaging. If you just want a phone and not an entertainment complex, this one is still a great.

PROS:

--Nokia's usual ease of use
--Excellent reception
--Practically indestructible!
--Good basic ringers (I don't care about
mp3 ringers, just want a ring-ring)
--Side volume keys
--Can easily see in direct sunlight,
also don't have to press button to
see display like you do on color phones.
Monochrome displays are underrated.
--Battery life is awesome partly because
of monochrome display.

CONS:

--No cool factor, but I don't really care
--The size is a con for some people, but it doesn't bother me.
--No speakerphone, but can use headset.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The problem this phone is so overlooked is because of the lack of features, however. So what? It lacks a color screen and camera....yeah. But it also has some of the best reception I have ever experienced. I guess since it has GSM, AMPS, and TDMA all-in-one, great job for Nokia!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I had this phone before I got my Samsung X475 and I think it was really good! It worked for what I needed. It works just as well as my old one and I am again very pleased.
My original lived a very rough life and survived all attempts to destroy it.
It was dropped many times from some very high places. It was left outside in the rain and even had the outer window plastic melted off.
The battery is really something else, as it lasts so long that I keep forgetting to recharge.
The internal antenna must be a good one, as I do not notice a difference when it is connected to my rooftop external.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Unlike the newer phones, each button is distinct and individual, no problem with hitting two buttons at once.

Good, sensitive receiver.

Rugged, one piece construction.

Good basic set of ring tones.

Works with the FlipJack remote broacast unit (with optional PopPort adapter).

Cons:

Power switch is hard to operate.

GAIT (TDMA and AMPS) no longer supported by Cingular. (my dad's phone can't even work in a simple store which is walmart or jewels or something. it shuts off like after 1 minute.)
-nice long-lasting battery

cons:
-dull color background
-no graphics
-no camera (not really a big deal)
-only monophonic ring tones
-no flip (i personally love flip phones)
-not a big enough phone book
-not a big enough number of voice commands

so i guess it's alright. but it's missing all the good stuff though. otherwise it's very useful for the people that don't care about expensive and "cool" phones. pretty cheap too. well bye.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

If you press "any" key while the phone is ringing, you have answered the call. This includes the volume bar on the side of the phone where you comfortably hold the phone. I have ask a number of techs at Cingular and even written Nokia. There is "no way" to turn this feature off. I have also had trouble with the phone shutting off and dropping calls. I have been waiting out my contract with Cingular for a free upgrade. I received a letter from them today to call them for upgrade. I can hardly wait until morning.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Upon opening the phone to attempt repair i have found the construction to be very flimsy... Not what i would expect from Nokia in regards to quality. I also don't like the fact there is no way to force the phone to a certain network mode. Battery life is good on my working unit. I have no complaints on the voice or signal quality and the size/shape is comfortable. Appearance of the phone is also pleasing.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

dhkbjk submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

The 6340i replaced my good ol' 7160, but has never performed as well.

I got my first 6340i (#1) as a refurb model when my 7160 flunked its swimming lesson.

6340i #1 had problems right off the bat - mostly rebooting or powering off at random. I thought it might be due to being a refurb and returned it for a replacement after about a week. 6340i (#2) was a brand-new phone and stayed with me less than 48 hours. It was even worse than #1 - switching off while sitting on my desk. 6340i (#3) was about like #2. And then #4 has been a keeper, but by no means perfect. Why did I put up with 3 bad phones? Simply put, I'm cheap and they kept replacing my refurb with brand-new phones.

With #4, which I've now had about a year, the performance has been adequate. It rarely turns itself off just sitting on my desk, but will sometimes in my pocket. I live in Atlanta and there are about three spots on m normal path that will cause the call to drop and sometimes cause the phone to reboot. I think it has something to do with switching to/from analog from/to GSM. When that happens the call _always_ drops and at various times of the year the phone will even reboot. I'd say it reboots spontaneously once a week on average.

I suspect, but Cingular won't confirm, that it has to do with their GSM network changes/upgrades.

Pros
500 contacts
Good volume
Good reception (ignoring the reboots)

Cons
Reboots
Need more contacts (1000)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jmeitzen submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Picked after having used it for 2 weeks and having done about 6 months of research on cell phones.

Pros:
-It's a GAIT phone (works on GSM, TDMA, and analog) so nationwide coverage area map is about as good as any I've seen. I have yet to put that to the test but around Austin, TX, it's worked better than my Moto.
-Cingular customer service is WAY better than ATTWireless's.
-Voice command dialing works better than the Moto v120 I had
-Equalizer is handy
-Can silence ringer without refusing call
-Internal antenna (great if carry in pocket)
-much easier to see battery level and signal strength than Motorola cell phones
-tried this phone in a notoriously bad area in town and although it went down to NO bars of signal strength, call was not dropped and didn't even get fuzzy!
-No camera
-Some friends of mine have two and they've been very durable even if the power button broke off one of theirs.

Cons:
-no speakerphone (although other Nokias with speakerphones are not loud enough to use while driving on highway while Moto's are)
-being discontinued by Cingular (only carrier that offers it)
-no Bluetooth but that's overrated
-weak selection of ringtones, TEN that are mostly little songs. Nokia, I don't want my phone to play a song when my phone rings! No downloadable ring tones on NokiaUSA.com available either (contrary to the specs on this site).
-If you're in BFE, this would be one of the best phones to have a shot at getting signal. Only problem with GAIT technology (according to info on the awesome phonescoop.com) is if you're driving and the phone switches from say GSM to TDMA or vice versa, the call gets dropped but you should be able to easily reconnect with this phone since it'll connect with GSM, TDMA, AND analog towers. I'd rather take my chances with a phone I know will work in Taos!
-backlight isn't super bright but display size makes up for it.
-not the phone's fault but cell phone companies should stop rounding partial minutes up!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

lindened submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

I bought two of these for the features - dual band, tri-mode including GSM. I don't care for the earpiece design... hard to line it up with your ear for best audio. Nokia hands-free didn't work properly... had to constantly wiggle the connection to keep it working. First phone kept dropping calls after a few minutes. Exchanged it at Cingular and got charged $50 -- they said Nokia did this -- for a "damaged phone" (but it was NEVER dropped or damaged). Replacement phone had problems, too. It shuts itself off constantly but intermittently. I wanted it on my desk (untouched) for several minutes, and saw it shut itself off. Battery is tight and contacts are clean. This phone was NEVER dropped either, but if I return it, they say I'll be charged $50 again. Its internal antenna is a huge drawback, lowering the signal strength when compared to other Nokia and Motorola phones with external antennas, side by side (on the same system). This phone needs an external antenna unless you're line-of-sight with a tower.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tinkerb45 submitted this review of the Nokia 6340i:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Both of my 6340i's broke within 1 year of normal usage. (Of all my previous phones, I've NEVER had a failure, and each of those were used 2+ years!). The microphone stopped working on both of my 6340i's. I thought, "no problem, its under warranty." However, after sending it back to Nokia thru my local retailer, they returned them both without fixing it, claiming there was "liquid damage"...WHAT?! I can guarantee with 100% certainty that neither phone had been damaged whatsoever by liquid. They both simply stopped working during a phone call. Poor customer service if you ask me. Why even have a warranty if you're not going to stand behind it? Because of this I'm dumping Cingular wireless and their POS Nokia phones.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
