drreming submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I came from the HTC Incredible, which in my opinion is the best phone ever. Period. But unfortunately I broke the touchscreen, and went looking for a replacement. After much deliberating between the Incredible 2, and the Thunderbolt, I chose the Thunderbolt. Here's my thoughts.

First off I mist say that contrary to other reviews, you CAN turn off the 4G connection if you want...
Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Network mode

Pros:
LTE is blazing fast, touchscreen is bigger, HTC Sense version is slightly more intuitive, forward facing camera (which I never use, but if your a Skypeaholic, it's cool), kickstand is nice for watching videos or speakerphone use. Other than that, it's basically the same phone as the Incredible, only newer, and 4G.

Cons:
A little more glitchy compared to the Incredible, battery life is poor (get the extended battery as it lasts for over a full day of use), on that note extended battery covers are lame for this phone, no trackball :(

Thanks for reading folks!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

sgtpeppersband9 submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for just over a month & am very satisfied. Got it the day before VZW started capping data but that's another story. I've had the original MOTO Droid & HTC Incredible. This is much better. Everyone needs to chill the F out the battery isn't as bad as everyone is saying. Just do your homework & *#*#4636#*#* & put it to CDMA only to keep battery life livable. With the new update just settings>wireless & networks>mobile network & put it on CDMA if no 4G. Even if there is keep it at this setting til you decide to use the browser or streaming video. Only time you need it. Great reception on this phone & not the buggy animation you get with Motorola phones. Dual core phones are all hype as you can see with the LG Revolution & Droid 3. Here's the breakdown:

Pros:
1. 4.3" screen
2. Great DLNA
3. Speakerphone is activated just by being set face down while on a call
4. HTC Sense GUI
5. Netflix capable

Cons:
1. Charging port set to where it can't be charged while kickstand is utilized
2. No HDMI output
3. Touch can get latened but fixed by a restart

Don't know why people have WiFi or dropped call issues but there's nothing that can't be fixed by restarting the phone or removing the battery & popping the SIM card cage up *no need to take the SIM card out*. And for your phone's sake do not *228 a 4G phone!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Was deciding between this, the Samsung Charge and the iphone and decided to go with this over iphone because of 4G/LTE and thought it was faster than the Samsung and likes the UI better.

Pros:
Large Screen
Very fast and no lag
Good call quality
Light and thin even with hard case/holster
HTC Sense is pretty user friendly
Keyboard are pretty good at guessing words
Car mount is great and has built in charge plug

Cons:
Battery life is pretty poor (waiting for my
extended battery) - but knew that
Would like a fixed keyboard but none of
4G/LTE phones are offering one yet
Cannot exit car mode by pressing home
- need to exit car mode first and then
press home
Vibrate is a little light and don't always
feel it
Screen is sometimes hard to see in daylight

If you are looking for a 4G/LTE Android on Verizon, I would recommend this one.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The BRD submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Like everyone else, I waited a long time for this phone to be released. While waiting, I researched everything I could about this phone-the good, bad, and indifferent. I've had the phone for about 4 months now and wanted to get used to it (coming from LG Dare) before posting a review of it.

Pros:
-Huge screen
-Snappy response, no lag between screens, phone navigation
-Sturdy phone-seems well built.
-4G speeds are awesome
-HTC Support is very helpful (much better than VZW's)
-Great camera

Cons:
-Battery life could be better, but that's already been well-documented and was a known issue before getting the phone. It's manageable with the right settings (with light-moderate use, I still have 1/2 battery at end of day and charge it every morning).
-Data connection seems to be unstable using WiFi. It won't connect to a hidden network and after being connected, once the phone has been in 'standby' for a few minutes, once I come back to using the WiFi, it is very slow and unresponsive. I have to re-start the WiFi for it to work again.
-Screen Display is very difficult to see outdoors.

I don't think the phone deserves the low ratings it has received since the things they're complaining about were known issues and well documented. As a phone, I have no complaints (although I wish they would hyphenate the phone numbers throughout), but as a computer, there's still some work to be done. Most of the issues I have with it are software related and the fixes they issue fix some things but cause other problems. Eventually they'll get it right (GB?). If you want a stable smartphone and aren't concerned about 'limitless' customization, then go with the iPhone. My spouse has one and while it has it's own limitations, it's a better 'computer' than the Tbolt (4G notwithstanding). PS: before purchasing ANY phone, do your homework, including pricing. I got mine for $175 3 weeks after it was released (and was selling for $250) because the GO WIRELESS dealer price-matched Amazon.com.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

However, it has been pretty disappointing.

Pros:
*Huge screen
*4G capablility
*HTC Interface
*Kickstand
*Ability to use phone and data at the same time

Cons:
*Screen clarity isn't the best and almost impossible to see in daylight
*Loses data connections frequently
*battery life is horrible
*Speaker is behind the kickstand
*Kickstand flips the same direction as charging port so it can not charge while it is flipped open and layed sideways.
*call quality is poor
*drops calls frequently
*the screen doesn't always lock when you are on a call so I frequently hit the mute or end button with my cheek (so annoying!)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The phone is very fast and the Android Market has it all. Overall very happy with the phone.

The Pros:
Fast even on 3G much faster then DroidX
Screen is great
Easy to use
Does it all
Call quality is great
Reception is very good ( I am in Iowa )
Battery works for me but I do not use internet much

The Cons:
Really none at this time.
It would sure be nice if a Complete Owners manual was provided with the phone. Droids can do So much and the manuals are almost useless.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

GuyinLACA submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I really wanted 4G speeds, so I "upgraded" from the Droid X to the Thunderbolt. I must say that the Droid X was a superior phone in many respects and I'm not totally pleased with the Thunderbolt.

PROS:
+Awesome 4G data speeds
+Sturdy build quality
+Cool kickstand
+Great selection of Sense UI widgets
+Easier to customize than most phones which require root

NEUTRAL:
=The screen is very mediocre quality
=The Sense Contacts and Messaging apps are oversimplified

CONS:
-Reception is worse than the Droid X. More dropped calls and data dropouts.
-Call quality is poor at most volumes.
-Battery life is terrible, I average 10 hours per charge with medium use.
-Must lift the kickstand for the speakerphone to be loud enough
-The phone is very heavy/bulky

All in all, I really want a 4G version of my Droid X, so I will be getting the Droid Bionic. The Thunderbolt may be the best 4G phone as of June 2011, when compared to the Droid Charge and Revolution, but it's lacking compared to the Droid X and X2. I would recommend waiting for a more worthy 4G phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

umpirerob submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had my Thunderbolt for a few weeks now and I can't put it down. While the phone does have its flaws, you can't really complain too much because the phone overall just rocks!

First, the drawbacks:
- Battery life (to be expected and can be managed)
- Charging port location
- Lack of physical camera key
- Random reboots (hopefully will be fixed with next software OTA)
- Plenty of Verizon bloatware

Okay, now for the goods:
- "4G" LTE speeds (2 Mbps up/down in fringe 4G area outside StL, much better in the city)
- 3G speeds seem pretty good, surprisingly.
- 32GB Micro SD included - should be the norm for a phone like this, but it's not.
- Zero lag between screens, lightning fast processor
- BEAUTIFUL freaking screen!
- Kickstand (I actually use this all the time)
- Great camera
- Overall design / build
- HTC Sense and no Bing!

I'm not rooted at the moment. I love what Sense brings to the phone - HTC is probably the only manufacturer that takes vanilla Android and actually improves on it. Samsung and Moto aren't there, yet. I use FlexT9 for my keyboard and coming from a physical keyboard phone, I actually prefer the touchscreen only interface. Juice Defender and a charging cord are necessary during the day, especially if you play Plants vs. Zombies for hours during the day, but as long as you turn the LTE, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth off when not in use, the battery actually performs fairly well. I use the low brightness screen setting which is still amazing and I've only run down to 15% battery once (5 hours of LTE & YouTube will do that). This phone is a tad on the large size, but the back is nicely contoured and it feels great in the hand.

If you want Verizon's "4G" speeds, this is the phone to have. Heck, even if you don't, you really can't go wrong with this phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

My previous phone was the Samsung droid charge and was very disappointed, i took the first one back within four days, the sound quality was horrible and made a cracking and popping noise in head set, the replacement droid charge lasted one day and i took it back, and got the htc thunderbolt.

Pros. the screen is so crisp and clear, sound quality is outstanding, I am on Verizon. the phone is so fast on the internet and off. Great phone, I have found the perfect phone for me. All the good reviews i have read about this phone are true.

Cons, only one and that is the battery life, has to be charged daily, but the battery is running a powerful phone, the battery life is worth it to me. I give this phone a solid 5

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Nightlisa submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I ordered this phone because I am a ANDROID fan, and I wanted the experience of 4G.
Although Verizon Wireless doesn't have much 4G coverage in my area yet, I wanted to experience it anyway.

My only 4G choice was between these 2 models:
Samsung CHARGE and the HTC THUNDERBOLT
(The LG 4G phone came out a few days later.)

Coming from the MOTOROLA DROID phone,
I found the following features upsetting..

CONS:
1) PICS - After taking a pic, there is no option to SHARE PIC...

So the pic gets saved to your gallery.
Then you can go into MESSAGES, and send it as a text to someone. Or log into Facebook and post it. Or go into your email account, compose an email and attach it. That's a lot of extra steps from a former MOTO Droid user.

2) MULTI MEDIA MESSAGES - When someone sends you a picture message, HTC Automatically processes it with the SLIDESHOW software. The SLIDESHOW software, shows you the pic for about 5 seconds, and then closes it. If you want to see the picture, zoom in, etc - you have to Save it to your phone, and then go into it.. Kind of a pain for pictures you don't really want to keep. You can set the viewing slideshow options to longer than 5 seconds, but it reverts back on other messages. It also converts every SENT picture to this SLIDESHOW format, so if you are looking at your text log and want to zoom in on a pic, again you have to save it to your phone, just to zoom in, etc. NONE of your pics are viewable from your text log itself, you just see a lil icon that says slideshow. I reviewed tech bulletin boards & the only way around the slideshow is to use an texting application from Android Market.

TYPING:
In messaging & email, the system has to predict every single word you type. On Moto droid, if you knew how to spell and type, you didn't have to see interruptions on every word. Sometimes I spell the word correctly and hit space bar, and it changes my perfectly spelled word to a completely different word!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

yev_m submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

PROs:
- features and user interface
- screen size
- speed (esp on 4G)
- features

CONs:
- battery life in 4G areas
- some software bugs

Got this phone a couple of months ago.
Absolutely love the product design.
It can do everything, and very fast (including playing the Flash videos), especially on 4G.
The screen is big and high-contrast, I like it better than of the iPhone because it's bigger. Resolution is not the only thing that matters.

One huge disadvantage is the battery life when 4G network is available. It sucks all the juice out of battery even on standby.
It seems like the 4G circuit itself in the phone is a huge power hog. Luckily, I found a way (online, look it up) to lock the phone down to the 3G mode through the hidden test menu.
It does make the battery life similar to most smartphones. Not amazing, but tolerable.
I would have turned the phone back in, if I had not found that option.
-1 right there for HTC's and Verizon's apparent oversight.

I took another half a point for:
- Back button stopping working sometimes (reboot needed)
- New message indicator not going away sometimes (reboot or new message received clears it)
- Sometimes unable to start typing the response to a text message (exiting the messaging app and coming back usually helps).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Choice (on VZW) was narrowed between iPhone and the Tbolt. While they are identical on core functions -- mail, internet, apps, maps -- feature-for-feature the Tbolt easily wins:

Tbolt
- 4G
- Larger screen
- Replaceable battery and memory
- 8mp camera
- Free turn-by-turn GPS
- Adobe Flash in web pages
- USB port
- FM Radio
- $100 less (with a discount)

iPhone
- Higher screen resolution
- Better battery life
- Easier fit in hand/smaller/lighter
- Tons of after-market accessories
- iTunes (for ease of media management)

The phone is a blast, and I look forward to my commuter bus ride where I can tinker with it... until I get the low battery warnings. Yeah the battery issue is a MAJOR daily battle that forces me to curb usage and apply power settings. Though not willing to purchase the ridiculously large and heavy extended battery, over the next two years I can only hope/assume battery technology will improve.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I don't pay any extra premium for 4g data, so its a worthy buy. Yes, the battery life sucks, which is why the rating is low, but its improved with the new software and radio thats is pushed out.
Another thing, they advertise this as 8GB onboard storage (both at Verizon and HTC, and this site says so too for user storage), but the actual user storage available is around 2.5GB. HTC needs to stop lying, as there is a total of only 4GB available to the entire system by the way the emmc is partitioned, and apparently its permanent. I have read about this with other HTC devices too, and they gotta stop misinforming us.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

qingshan submitted this review of the HTC ThunderBolt:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Took some time and research

Have had Blackberries for a number of years (many good features). Wanted a phone that I could see.

Pros: Screen size and the ability to expand text as much as I needed and speed. That covers what I wanted and the phone delivers

Cons: Not the battery. I put in a 1,600 mAh aftermarket battery which may, or may not, be better than OEM but I can do 2 days if I don't use it too much (1 not a big data pig). I am not totally happy with the calender or the syncing - could be me (likely is) but I am having to wean myself from Outlook or I may have to buy one of the proprietary sync apps.

About the battery issue. I spent some times on the boards and use the tips I saw. 4g (a bit of a pain without a toggle), Bluetooth, and WiFi are off unless being used.

Bloatware - yes there is a lot but I don't think it is slowing it down and it does not even clutter if one personalizes one's screens screens

Overall I am very pleased with the phone

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Phone is very responsive, sounds good and has a lot of capabilities. The screen is crisp and clear and the sound is very clear on calls. Battery life as already mentioned in other posts could be a lot better. And I had a issue with Bluetooth loosing sync with my Camry phone control. But a repairing it and a battery pull on the Thunderbolt has so far corrected this. Overall I love this phone and with the exception of the Battery and Bluetooth I would give this a 5. So deducted a half a point for that. I would love to see Verizon open up some and allow apps to be removed that the user does not want. But, that will never happen.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

One reason, BATTERY. I do not care if a phone does the dishes for you, if it does not last more than 24 hours, it is NOT worth the $300 upgrade price. Verizon TEST your phones first, OK?

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Even the BBerry storm did better than this.

The battery is the worst in the world to most phones. The only reason I can give it a 2.0 on the scale is because I like the programming. For the average geek, it's a cell phone dream.

Although it can be a little complicated to get used to, it can be quite fun once you get accustom to it.

Drawbacks seem to be that darn battery. It looks like the wise choice will be the Iphone after all. Hopefully Apple with address the common 4G issues and come hard with something good to WOW us!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It is exactly like someone buying a Cadillac escalade or a range rover and then complaining about the gas mileage.
The thunderbolt is a large device with a very fast processor that requires a lot of its battery, and if you know how to deal with it, the battery delivers.

Also, if you are not into larger phones then you will not care for the phone. But you can't knock it for it's size. YOU bought the thing!

Now, this is a very advanced phone that does a lot. The 4g is blazing fast if you are in a 4g area, and the phone's screen provides a very large display for your fingers to work with.

My only criticism of the phone is that the display should have had a higher resolution screen. 480 x 800 does not cut it for a device like this with a 4.3 inch screen.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
