I have been a Nextel customer since 2003. I have had the i90, the i830, and the i836. My i836 was a good phone except the battery life was nothing to write home about. It was lost about 3 months ago. I have the Assurion insurance policy, so I contacted them for a replacement. They sent me the i850. The first one they sent me was a factory re-furb; I couldn't get a signal on it to save my life. I sent it back. They sent me another re-furb. This one wouldn't stay powered up for more than about 30 seconds. I called them back and complained and insisted that they send me a phone that worked, a new phone not someone else's problem (re-furb). Now this one is only about 2 1/2 months old and looks like it's 100 years old. The finish is wearing off, the antena base is cracking, and the flip part of the phone flops back and forth like a flag in the wind. It's, in short, a piece of junk. Also, the signal strength is terrible. I called Sprint/Nextel and told them to fix it or I was just going to eat the early termination fee and go with someone else. They got me in touch with Assurion again. The man who talked to me tonight was very nice and very appologetic. He is going to send me out another phone. I told them "DO NOT send me another re-furb, or another i850. They are sending me an i580. I very much hope that this is a better phone. Although, that wouldn't take much. I had a Motorola brick phone year sgo that was a better phone than this thing. I will say that the graphics screen is kinda cool, and the camera was a nice change for me because it is the first camera phone I have had. But, that little camera does not make up for the bad quality of the phone. It seems to me to be a cheap piece of junk. A two month old phone should not look like it completely falling apart like this one does. Those of you with positive reviews of this phone, I don't see how you could like it. I like how it functions and looks...but have had HORRIBLE reliability problems with it. I owned the first one for two weeks and it died. It locked up like a computer, then would not ever turn back on. So, I had to drive an hour to the nearest Nextel repair shop and they swapped it out for a "factory reconditioned" one. Here I was after spending $150 and two weeks later being handed a used, beat up phone. It did work however so I took it. Less than 24 hours later...this one died as well. It was working fine then all of a sudden it shut down instantly. It didn't power down...it just blinked off. It hasn't stayed on for more than 15 seconds since. Now I have to drive another hour back to the repair shop to swap it yet again. If this one doesn't work out...I am DONE with Nextel and their phones!<br /><br />By the way...if anyone lives near Coxsackie NY, DO NOT GO TO THE NEXGEN NEXTEL STORE ON ROUTE 9W TO DEAL WITH PAULA. I have never before seen a customer sales person that was more rude then she was. The build quality is good, although the plastic is a bit cheesy. The phone has a smooth action flip as well. <br /><br />Above all though, this phone excels in call quality. Ive owned a ton of phones before, on Nextel and other carriers. The i850 is about as close to landline quality youre going to get. Given Nextels cramped network, this phone does its best to churn out the highest quality calls. This above all else makes this phone worth buying. The first thing I noticed between this phone and my old cingular phone is the battery life. My old phone held a great charge and could last me for days straight but with the i850 the battery life is way shorter and I to charge it almost every 12 hours. The other difference I noticed in nextel is their signal sucks, I can't go down the road and not loose my single. Camera is by far the best I've seen on a mobile phone. Make sure you use the "Fine" picture quality and "X-Large" for best results. I also like the zoom with the camera. Web is awesome on this phone and calls are very nice. For boost mobile users or anyone else needing to call internationally, use callingcardplus.com. Very nice cards for good prices. Ringtones are nice and Speaker phone is loud. Screen display is great in the daytime and nighttime. The reception is 4 bars strong. People always talked bad about the reception and I have to say to those people right now to silence themselves. I had a great reception in a storm when others who had other wireless service phones didn't. I can go on and on about this phone. THE BEST PHONE EVER AND IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER.<br /><br />Now the bad(which there always is)! Sometimes it restarts on it's own(very very rare, only happened twice since I've had it). Doesn't come with a keyboard(you have to buy it seperate which is cool you can still get one). Memory is great(10MB), but would've been cooler to add extended memory.<br />I can still use it on my trip to take pictures (Total Hi-Res shots I can take 250 to max phone memory, but probably 150 or so if it limits). Also a flash would've been nice guess I can go get a clip light to solve that problem.<br /><br />---Bottom Line---<br />Best phone I've ever owned and will continue to use it for a long time. Wow, what a change.....here we go:<br /><br />---------------<br /><br />PROS:<br /><br />Large, crisp color screen<br /><br />Loud speakerphone and earpiece<br /><br />Java apps (wish there was a calculator though)<br /><br />Great signal quality, even at zero bars...sounds like a landline phone<br /><br />Not having to through Net to create a new text message!!!<br /><br />Menus are logical and easy to navigate through<br /><br />Camera works well...it's not as bad as a lot of people think...just wish it had some type of flash<br /><br />Very cool and slick looking phone...blue disco light keypad, blue backlit outside display, and metallic silver color...much smaller than previous Nextel phones too<br /><br />Durable phone...I've already dropped it 20 feet onto concrete...I was afraid I had ruined it, but it didn't hurt it at all!<br /><br />DirecTalk, the off-network PTT...very, very useful when your group is out of network coverage and needs to communicate<br /><br />CONS:<br /><br />The only "con" I can think of is the somewhat short battery life...but this is the case with all Nextel phones...I can sacrifice some battery life for a great looking, durable phone that works everywhere!<br /><br />---------------<br /><br />Overall, what an awesome phone...it's amazing how far Nextel has come! I use this phone extensively. I am with Nextel. I have used this phone for 4 months now so I have had ample time to evaluate this phone. <br /><br />Quality of signal has left me wanting. I often drop calls. When I do have a signal, quality of sound is great. I use this phone for business, so here is what I base my pros and cons on:<br /><br />Pros: <br /><br />Love the voice memo. When I am on the road and receive a call, I can jump to the voice memo to record my thoughts without having to stop to write down particulars. I can retrieve the notes later. <br /><br />I like the top buttons for silencing a call when in my holster, if I am with a customer. <br /><br />The shortcut buttons are easy to set up and makes my life easier when trying to access certain areas of the phone that I use the most. <br /><br />Like the voice activated dialing. Just wish they would take more than twenty entries. I would utilize this more.<br /><br />CONS:<br /><br />Hate the buttons on the keypad. I am often hitting the wrong button due to my thumb being too big. I had the I-730 for the longest time and I liked that keypad better. When you are driving and have to use the keypad to enter a number, you have to be careful to ensure you are entering accurate information.<br /><br />Miserable reception in this market.<br /><br />Radio Frequency messes with my wireless router when I am at my desk. Causes a big inconvenience when I have to walk away from my computer due to poor reception and have to take my paperwork to the other side of the room to answer a question for a client on the mobile phone. I often find myself having to call the client back from my land line due to the poor call quality on the mobile line. <br /><br />Camera is not worth having.
