Cingular today said it will roll out "2.5G" GSM/GPRS service in California by the end of the second quarter and in New York City in the summer. The company also said it will launch the service in St. Louis, Detroit, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Connecticut, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and three cities in Florida by the end of 2002. Most Cingular customers will have access to GPRS by the end of year through roaming partnerships. GPRS will be available in all of its markets by early 2004. Cingular also reiterated that it plans to upgrade its networks further with 3G EDGE technology, which offers even greater data speeds. That upgrade will begin in the fourth quarter 2002 and is expected to be completed by early 2004.
