Qualcomm today announced that leading equipment manufacturers Kyocera, Nortel Networks, Samsung Electronics, Sanyo, Spatial Wireless, TCL Mobile and Winphoria Networks support the development of GSM1x, a new technology evolution option for GSM operators. GSM1x lets GSM operators deploy efficient CDMA2000 1x radio-access towers and phones, while keeping their GSM core network. Qualcomm, Nortel, Samsung, Spatial and Winphoria will demonstrate GSM1x, using commercial CDMA2000 1X handsets, at CTIA Wireless 2002 in Orlando. The demonstration will include 2-way SMS, voice calls, and data calls, achieving high-speed data rates up to 153 kbps.
