NTT DoCoMo is working on lip-reading technology that could relieve the annoyance of loud cellphone conversations, New Scientist magazine reported on Wednesday. Engineers at NTT DoCoMo have developed a prototype and hope to have a lip-reading cellphone available in about five years. The technology uses sensors in the phone that detect tiny electrical signals sent by muscles around the mouth. So far the phone can recognize vowels and engineers are now working on consonants. The technology could also help people who have lost their voice.
