700 MHz Spectrum Auction Ends

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this week closed the bidding in auction 44, netting $88.7 million. On the block were 484 wireless spectrum licenses in the lower 700 MHz band, which can be used for a variety of fixed and mobile commercial services. Aloha Partners led in final bids with 77 licenses, followed by Vulcan Spectrum, which won 24 licenses. The bidding attracted no big mobile telephone carriers, because the airwaves are presently being used by TV stations and it is unclear when they will vacate the spectrum.
