Cingular Wireless has confirmed that it has halted shipments of E-OTD position location equipment. In a recent statement to the FCC, the carrier expressed concern over the technology's ability to meet the FCC's E-911 accuracy requirements in rural areas. E-OTD, developed by UK-based Cambridge Positioning, uses base stations to triangulate callers' locations. According to reports, Cingular is considering U-TDOA technology from TruePosition as a possible replacement. TruePosition last month announced a successful test of its technology with Cingular in the Houston area.
