(updated) Ericsson and AT&T Wireless today completed the first WCDMA/UMTS call in a live 3G network environment in the Americas. Previous test calls took place in lab environment. Ericsson is providing the complete WCDMA/UMTS network, as well as Sony Ericsson test unit handsets. The call achieved initial packet data speeds up to 384 kbps. The joint effort is part of a trial of the first 1900 MHz UMTS/WCDMA system in the Americas, which will have more than 100 cell sites in the Dallas area by the end of the year. AT&T also demonstrated an EDGE voice call today on the Dallas network, using a Motorola EDGE device. AT&T currently has approximately 50 percent of its nationwide GSM network upgraded to EDGE, and plans to launch the service in mid-2003.
