Cingular Wireless today announced that it has now deployed GSM and GPRS to more than 50 percent of potential subscribers nationwide. New markets officially launched today include mid-west Tennessee and Kentucky. GSM service was also soft-launched today in Philadelphia, Ohio, Detroit, and Minnesota. Ninety percent of the covered population and all major markets should be complete by the end of 2003, and the overlay will be complete by mid-2004. Cingular is also deploying Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) speech channels with its new GSM networks, which is expected to double network capacity and improve service quality. Cingular is now also beginning to test EDGE technology. By the end of 2003, all of Cingular's major markets will be both hardware and software enabled for EDGE. Users can expect average throughput speeds of 100kbs - 150kbs in a fully loaded EDGE environment.
