Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo said today it will begin offering W-CDMA 3G services with AT&T Wireless by December 2004 in San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas and San Diego. The two companies will set up a special committee to map out their 3G rollout plan. In addition, another DoCoMo official will become AT&T Wireless's director. The Japanese carrier already owns a 15 percent stake in AT&T Wireless. DoCoMo has struggled with its year-old 3G service in Japan, the world's first using the W-CDMA format, attracting a mere 150,000 users. Rival KDDI, which uses CDMA2000 technology, has amassed four million 3G subscribers during the same period.
